Is your vista a 64 bit OS? If so this dvd-writer is compatible with 32 bit OS. You may need to upgrade the firmware for it. Maybe this link can help LiteOn firmware search. I've upgraded firmware for a dvd writer already with no bad consequences but I have crashed one of my motherboards trying to do the same. So if you're not comfortable doing it, get the people you bought it from or some techie to do it for you. Hope this helps
I had the same issue with a liteon DVD drive I had. It worked fine and then one day it couldn't write to a DVD if I paid it to. I troubleshooted it for a few days, installed all the latest updates and patches and still nothing. From what I could tell, it baiscally died. So fortunately Liteons are relatively cheap so I just went out and got another LiteOn and it worked just fine. I would consider purchasing a new Drive.
Laser either dirty or starting to go.Try cleaning laser with commerical disc cleaner, put a drop of rubbing alcohol on brushing.Laser can be cleaned manually with a Q tip dipped in rubbing alcohol but this requires opening burner. If you do this MAKE CERTAIN ELECTRICAL PLUG IS PULLED,lasers cause nasty burns.
Some times the problem is just the brand of disc, some brands don''t work in Liteon's.
If laser is going the burner can be replaced. Most of the Liteon 5001's used Liteon 401s burners,411s or 451s dvd burners all will work. The dvd burners mount from the bottom PC burners mount from the side so they would have to be adapted, many PC burners won't work in these older liteons some freeze up the second you hit fast forward.
Go into your BIOS and see if you can get it to autodetect the drive. You should be able to this but I can't tell you how to because all BIOS setups are different.
Then save your BIOS and reboot.
The drive should then be recognised as the right thing.
Hello vbrad511,
We searched everywhere, and could not find any manual. You will also need drivers for the chipset. The best we could do is this link http://www.liteon.com/prod/getService.do?xml_id=4_6&xml_id=4_6 which you can email Lite-On and get the information or links emailed to you. Sorry that we were not more helpful.
Please let us know how it goes for you.
Best regards,
nightdiver
