Cools for a while ... keeps running but stops cooling.

Carrier Model 38CKC060370 About two years old and has worked very well during past two summers. Now ... with thermostat set for about 69 deg. ... system runs for about 1/2 hr. and puts out cool air at about. 65 deg at vent ...drops inside temp from high 70s to low>mid 70s ... then stops producing cool air put condenser and fan keeps running. System has to be turned off for a while and started up again to continue producing cool air.
Service company said that condenser was icing up due to stuck bypass ?? They said everything now looks good ... PG&E said power consumption is normal ... but system still only cools for a short while and will not chill house down to or below about 73 deg.

If the refrigerant has been accurately charged and diagnosed, I would look for an air restriction. Check your filter first of all. It sounds like it may still be trying to freeze up. Make sure all the vents are at least a little open and the return grill is not blocked. In the Rocky mountain region we like to see around 44- 50 deg. at the vents. 65 would tell us that everything is not ok.

Window unit (110) cools for a few minutes then stops cooling just fan air unit is about 6 0r 7 years old

It sounds like your compresssor is shutting off on an overload. After the overload cools down the compressor comes back on until the overload heats up and shuts the compressor off again. The fan keeps running as it is not on the same circuit as your compressor.

Can i Use 5w-50 oil in a1999 Cavalier in the Summer or will it Hurt it Motor that is

You can drive the car during the summer, your radiator cools the engine. Today's cars are not air-cooled engines, they are water-cooled.

How much Freon R-22 usually require to fill up an empty Air Conditioner. My AC model number is 38CKC060370. Thanks

On the manufactures tag, it will list the pounds and ounces, that is required, this usually includes, about 25 feet of line, usually add 1 1/2 ounces per foot past that.
Sincerely,
Paul
PS. It is best to weight the charge in with electronic scales designed for this,

AC not cooling during the day

Your AC cooling efficiency is low when he ambient temperature is high and naturally it cools well when the outside temperature drops.

Please remove the filter on the grill and try to clean it under the tap water and after removing all the dust fix it back to the unit. This would increase the cooling efficiency of the unit.

Your AC is also five years old. Please avoid frequent opening of doors or windows.

Ensure that the exhaust fan and the blower of your unit are functioning normal.

The technician might not have done a proper job in fixing the area where the refrigerant would have leaked out. Please check the refrigerant pressure to ensure that no further refrigerant leak has taken place. Or even servicing your unit he would have punchered the tubes resulting in very slow leak of refrigerant resulting in no cooling or less cooling. It takes around a month to feel the pinch of it and the refrigerant. One fine morning after sometime the unit will run and it would start throwing hot air instead of cool breeze!

This is definately not a good thing. This unit is a safety hazard to say the least. Check for recalls by reporting it to the consumer product safety.

Carrier thermostat

I hate to say it but Ive had trouble with Carrier's Tstats doing similar improper things. Unfortunatly the only repair is going to be replacement of the whole tstat. I recommend Honeywell's FocusPRO or VisionPRO tstat. Ive yet to have one fail and they have a 5yr warranty if they ever do.
