The cc has been enabled on your cable box. Usually there is a hidden menu accessed by turning off the cable box. Yes I did say turning off the cable box first. Then immediately pressing the menu button on the front of the cable box. The hidden menu should pop up and one of the menu options will be closed captioning,. Disable it.

When hooking up HD Cable box I get "not supported

You most likely have to set the Cable Box to a specific resolution. Because that model only provides 720p/1080i, the box must be set to match that. You may need to use the yellow/white/red Composite output on the box to the tv first, so you can access the boxes menu and set it to 720p or 1080i, then I recommend using Component cables (Red/Blue/Green with white/red for audio) out of the box in to the TVs "Component 2" input. Now you should get a good HD picture. If you still can't get it to work, give me a reply with details and I will get back to you.

Invalid format

If you get that across all inputs or channels then your digital board is bad. If you get it only on one input such as HD cable box, HD satelitte receiver or Blu_Ray player then they are set for the wrong output on that connector. The TV most likely will only accept up to 720p or 1080i....

HDTV and cable box; no volume on channels higher than 99

Can you tell me, is the set top box connected directly to the tv? (i.e. not to a surround sound receiver or anything)

720p output doesn't work

The problem might be that the set can not handle the change in signal. Try setting the AVR-247 to 720P first then turning on the set. Or manually set the TV to receive 720P then change the AVR. TI believe that you have a connectivity issue where the two units are not speaking the same language at the same time. Update this with your results and please post the TV make and model.
Thanks,
Dan

Screen flicker when watching 1080i

Component video has a max resolution of 720p. in order to use 1080i or p you have to use hdmi or dvi connections. That is why you get the flicker.
