sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

Welcome to Fixya.

If your computer does not recognize the hard drive, here are few fixes you may want to try:

  • Disconnect the hard drive and reboot the computer. Reconnect the hard drive.
  • Connect the hard drive via the USB port on the back of your computer.
  • Use a different cable or if this has a firewire interface, use the firewire if you have a firewire port. If this works, then the USB connection is failing.
  • If the drive has been formatted, please make sure that it was formatted correctly. Refer to your user manual.
  • Try connecting the hard drive to another computer and see if the recognizes it. This will let us know if the original computer has a USB port problem.
Hope this helps.

All the best!

My external HD will not read on my computer anymore. It spins and lights up as if loading, but does not connect.

Most likely the interface from the external case has failed. Take out the actual hard disk from the case and put it in a desktop - if the disk is still good it will appear in My Computer. If it's not there then the disk is dead, time for a new one.

Which "disk utilities" did you use?
Ones that check the "file-system-integrity" (that every file on the disk is listed in the table-of-contents, and that no 2 files point to the same block on the disk)?
Ones that write data to every block on the disk, and read the data back, to confirm that the disk can _correctly_ store data ?

What computer? Desktop? Laptop?

How much voltage/amperage does each USB port supply to the connected USB device?

Are you connecting the devices to a USB hub, or directly to your computer?

Do the external disk-drives each have their own power-supply?

Try changing the USB port to connect it. Also try substituting the cable used to connect the errant disk. It may be a cable issue or a USB port on your computer.

I was able to use my Hitachi xl 1000 external hard drive on my computer and I wanted to be able to use it for my Macbook Pro as well but as soon as I used it for Time Machine Backup I wasn't able to use it...

If the MAC formats the external hard drive then the desktop cannot see any files on the hard disk even though it detects the external hard drive.
If you format the external hard drive using the Desktop computer and format it in FAT32 then the MAC can read and write to this hard drive and the desktop PC can also read and write to the external hard drive.
MAC computers can read and write on PC formatted disks but not the other way around.

Will the E-Tower 366is accept a 300Gb hard drive? My restore disk that came with the computer has Windows 98 and I have the Windows XP home edition upgrade currently installed. The original hard drive...

The 366IS appears to mount a Trigem Florida-TG/TGA motherboard, which does not support LBA48 access to disks larger than 137Gb. You can try to format the hard disk, either on the 366IS or on another computer, so that the first primary partition is 130 Gb in size. You lose the rest, but the hard disk should work.
To be sure, burn it in by write-testing it using any one of the many freeware "hard disk diagnostics" boot CD's.

Optiarc DVD Drive does not work anymore.

Try uninstalling the device in the Device Manager, then restart the computer. See if Windows redetects the device and reinstall it. Next, try accessing the BIOS and see if the BIOS sees it, and be sure its enabled there. If both of these options fail, open the machine and make sure that the drive has a working power connector attached. If the connector is bad, switch the power lead over to a working connector.

Hello! Had the same problem - go onto the Lacie official website. Select whatever type of drive that it is you have, and simply go onto the software update page. I literally downloaded the desktop manager (I own the Sam Hecht Little Disk) and it appeared! Good luck
