It won't print and the light keeps flashing. I lost the instructions!

The flashing light could indicate either a communication problem between one of your cartridges and the printer, a short in one of the cartridges, paper jam or the cartridge carrier has stalled. Please follow the steps below to fix the problem:

  1. Remove the sheets of paper from the feeder. Make sure there are no foreign objects or debris in the feeder.
  2. Open the printer cover and remove both the cartridges.
  3. While the cover is open, ensure there are no paper jams and the cartridge carrier is free from obstructions.
  4. Close the printer cover.
  5. Re-brick your printer. Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
  6. When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.
  7. Close the printer cover and check the light status.
  8. If light on printer is normal, open the printer cover and reinsert the other cartridge. Check the light status.
  9. Replace whichever cartridge is causing the light to flash with a new cartridge. You can also try to insert a different known working cartridge to determine if the other is faulty.
  10. Load some paper. Try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

The paper light is flashing. The tray has paper, there is no paper jam. I check everything, put tray back in, press go and after a few seconds, there is a click noise and it starts flashing. What do I do?

The light flashing may mean more things, not just a paper jam. Could mean any of the following:
- Front cover is open: Close the front cover of the printer.
- Back cover is open: Close the back cover of the printer.
- Paper jam: Clear the paper jam. To see paper jams and how to clear them, click here. If the printer does not start printing, press the Go button.
- No paper fed manual feed slot: Put the paper back in the manual feed slot.
- Memory full: The printer memory is full and the printer cannot print full pages of a document. To solve this problem, click here.
- Print overrun: A print overrun occurred and the printer cannot print full pages of a document. To solve this problem, go here.
- Drum Error: The corona wire needs to be cleaned. To see how to clean the corona wire, click here.

Hp Deskjet F4480 continually reads out of paper even though its not and will not print. This problem occured only after I refilled the cartridges and put them back in.

Ok, I had this problem too and it started after I replaced the ink cartrtidges. The printer had a flashing light and the software read "out of paper". I can't be exactly sure what fixed it but here's what I did: I unplugged the printer while it was still on and left it unplugged for several hours (several minutes should have the same effect of clearing the device's memory, I just had to go to a meeting). I then plugged it back in and the printer fed the paper, but was feeding it sideways. I removed that paper and put a single piece of 4x6 photo paper in it and it fed that paper sideways also, crinkling it up. I tried a few more times by hitting the 'Cancel' button which would cause it to try to refeed the paper. I then checked the back of the printer and discovered the back panel had come loose at some point. I replaced it and the printer then fed a sheet correctly and printed the alignment page. I think the thing that fixed the issue was leaving the machine unplugged for awhile.

Will not print test page or documents

  • Make sure the printer is turned off and the paper-release lever is pushed back to the single-sheet position. Raise the paper guide upright.
  • While holding down the LF/FF button, turn on the printer. The PAUSE light flashes.
  • Slide the left edge guide until it locks in place at the guide mark. Next, adjust the right edge guide to match the width of your paper.
  • Slide a sheet of paper down firmly between the edge guides until it meets resistance. The printer loads the sheet automatically.
  • Press the PAUSE button. The printer begins printing the self test.
  • To stop printing temporarily, press the PAUSE button.
  • To end the self test, make sure the printer is not printing. Press LF/FF to eject the sheet; then turn off the printer.
