Whats my wireless encryption key

plug your pc directly to your router with an ethernet cable.

1-open your browser
2- if you have a d-link type (192.168.0.1) into your browser; if you have a linksys type in (192.168.1.1) in the browser.
3- the default username and password for D-Link is user: admin and no password. for linksys the username is admin and the password is admin.
4- Once you are logged in, on a d-link click "wireless settings" and scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see your encryption key.
on a linksys click on "wireless" in the navigation bar, and right under there will be a button saying "wireless security" once you click on that your encryption key will be displayed.

Hope this helped!

if you have a linksys router then you can just reset it to factory settings by holding the reset button on the back for 30 seconds when you power it on.
then you can go to http://192.168.1.1
default login is blank and password is admin.

We just added a second laptop to our home network and in setting up the laptop for wireless it asked for a pin number for our linksys wireless router but the pin number is not on the unit and we don't have...

Yes this is very straight forward

open internet explorer on your computer which is connected to wireless router.

browse to your gateway address. The default for linksys is usually http://192.168.1.1

then it will ask for username and password

linksys default username: (leave this blank)
linksys default password: admin

if that doesn't work try username: admin
password: admin

Once logged into console you should be able to see wireless security settings

Click on that and it will take you through to a page with your security settings on there you will see a wireless key or network key or wireless passphrase.

simply make a note of the key as its written. (If the password is masked or *********** out ) which is the case on some of the newer linksys devices you can simply overtype the password with a new one, bear in mind that you will have to then update any clients that normally connect to the wireless network with the new password. So thats all computers, laptops, DS's Wii's Playstations & Xbox's.

******I'd STRONGLY recommend you DO NOT change the wireless password / security key over wireless you should always do it using an RJ45 ETHERNET cable connected to your computer and the router. *********

I am needing the key or WEP to re-connect to wireless

If it was not setup with a WEP key then try "admin" that is the password for Linksys when not set up. The purpose of the WEP key is to install a password to type in before anyone can use your network. So if "admin" does not work then you have to ask the person who set up the Wireless Network what the WEP key is.

Wireless router connection problems

Assuming "cannot connect to linksys router directly" means you cannot connect to a Wireless Lan managed by Linksys router,
1) try to connect new computer to LinkSys Router using a Lan cable, add new PC to your network.
2) recover protocol (WEP or WPA) and Key of WLAN (Passphrase or Key: TKIP or AES) either from other PC on same network either from your Router.
3) If you missed actual key you must connect to router and reset it to a new key to be eventually used for every connected device.
Call for detail on this possibility

How do I find out my wep key

Looks like you will have to login to the router from the other computer to find the key.
Usually, the address to the router admin screens is one of the following:
192.168.0.1 Linksys
192.168.1.1 NetGear
192.168.10.100 Motorola
Generally 192.168.1.1 will work for most.
Default Login:
Login = admin
Password = password (default - if this doesn't work, then you will need to find it or initialize the router)
Go to the WEP security Screen
NetGear EXAMPLE:
Security Encryption (WEP)
Authentication Type *Automatic*
Encryption Strength *64bit* (64 bit is sufficient - the network overhead is less than 128 bit)
Security Encryption (WEP) Key (The active key below is marked with *)
Passphrase *Blank*
Key 1 abcdabcdab (64 bit examples = 10 hex digits 128 bit will be longer string)
Key 2 dcbadcbadc
Key 3 123456789a
Key 4 *Blank*
Click logout when finished

LinkSys Example:

Wireless Network Menu
Wireless Network Mode Mixed
Wireless Network Name (SSID) MyWireless
Wireless Channel 7 - 2.442 GHZ
Wireless SSID Broadcast Enable
Wireless Security
Security Mode WEP
Default Transmit Key 1 (This is the active key)
WEP Encryption 64 bits (or 128 bits)
Passphrase
Key 1 abcdabcdab
Key 2 dcbadcbadc
Key 3 123456789a
Key 4
There is no logout for the LinkSys. Just disconnect
