I have a Denon AVR 1802 and everything seems to be working properly, but I an mot getting any sound from the unit. When I perform a test tone, I get sound from all the speakers, but I can not get sound either from the TV or teh DVD. It has worked fine in the past, I was wondering if there is a button that may have been pushed by accident or something, I have two small children and they may have pushed something that caused teh issue

Go though your menu on the reciever, Look for the speaker functions for your front end rear speakers ,It was probably turned off. Was it working before you got it from your friend,

replace all the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply. i had the exact same problem with mine and once i replaced the capacitors it powered up and stayed on and worked perfect.
these capacitors tend to fail as they're of poor quality.
this fault is very common on denon receivers, especially the later models.

connect your analog output from the cablebox to the receiver md/tape in. then connect your tv audio input to the md/tape out of the receiver. or you could just pass it straight from the box to the tv, bypassing the receiver altogether.

I hate to be the bearer f bad news but it has been my experience , anything hit by lightening stays hit permanantly ..
You may find a few components on the quick scan of the circuit burnt or damaged , but you can guarantee that other components have been fried also .. It does enough damage to any electrical system when you get a 300v spike on the mains .. so imagine what approx 1/2 a million volts will do to a 12 volt radio ?? dont waste your money call your insuarnce company and claim for it ?. ... Is this only when using external inputs? The manual says the Tone Control will not function in Direct Mode. Try Stereo and various DSP surround modes to see if the Tone Control works.

Make sure you have an anteena connected and adjusted

Because the sound is only faint says to me that the power amp that controls the left channel is faulty. You need to look at the device(s) on the heatsink and probably replace them.

Many original remotes are exspensive and hard to get hold of , Radio Shack or Maplins have many universal remotes that not only will allow you to control your AVR 1802 but many other devices you have also ... at probably half the price . ... regards Vortash
