I have a CDC-X207 were the display does not light up. I can see the display is working but can't see at night. Is there a dim feature on this radio and if not then can I get the display to light again? I have extensive electronic background but I don't want to open up the front panel without a little preceding information.

SOURCE: Display issues with Aiwa CDC X207

I had the same problem. There are two small light bulbs that illuminate the digital display, and they are burned out.

You can easily replace them. The Aiwa part number for them is 8Z-KT1-641-010. The bulb is made by Sony, and the Sony part number is U0087654U.

I purchased them from Union Electronic Distributors:

https://www.ued.net/ued/addItems.do?itemCode=SNYU0087654U

Note that the product is not an item they keep in stock, so it may take 1-2 weeks or more before you receive them. Be patient.

Here are the steps to replace the bulbs. You will need a small (#1) Phillips screwdriver and a soldering iron (low heat). A very small flat blade screwdriver (1/8") will also be helpful.

1) Remove the faceplate from the radio and bring it to a well-lit work table.

2) Remove the four Phillips screws on the back on the faceplate.

3) Carefully separate the back half of the faceplate cover from the front half. There are three locking tabs along the top, and three locking tabs along the bottom. I used the small flat blade screwdriver to separate the two halves.

4) Once the back half of the faceplate has been removed, re-install two of the Phillips screws to hold the circuit board in place (one screw on each end). You don't need to screw them down tightly; just screw them in until you begin to feel them stop. These screws will keep the circuit board from separating from the front faceplate and causing the buttons to fall out!

5) Locate the two bulbs. They are labeled PL 901 and PL 902 (may also be labeled PL 1 and PL 2). Carefully unsolder the bulbs and remove them from the circuit board. You may want to do one at a time.

6) Each bulb has a colored cover to change the color of the light (I jokingly refer to them as 'bulb condoms'). Remove the covers and carefully slide them in place on the new bulbs. You may want to slightly dampen the bulbs to aid in sliding the covers on. Be sure to slide them all the way down.

7) Solder the new bulbs in place. They are not polarity sensitive.

8) Trim off the excess wires.

9) If you installed the two screws in Step 4, remove them.

10) Carefully re-attach the rear faceplate cover to the front faceplate cover, making sure that all six locking tabs snap in place.

11) Put the four Phillips screws in the rear faceplate and carefully tighten them.

That's it! Now, put the faceplate back on the radio, turn it on, and enjoy your lighted display!

Hope this helps.

Ron

Interior Lights Dimming Circuit Description
VF Displays
When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the instrument cluster activates its VF display. The instrument cluster also coordinates the display illumination for the radio (IRC), the cellular telephone (PHN), and the climate control Panel (CCP) anytime the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
Incandescent Dimming 1 (INC DIM 1)
The INC DIM 1 consists of lamps powered by CKT 8 (GRY). These are referred to as the park lamp backlighting because they are only active if the park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates darkness.
Incandescent Dimming 2 (INC DIM 2)
The INC DIM 2 output is used as a general interior light source and an illuminated entry feature that provides interior lighting. The INC DIM 2 consists of lamps powered by CKT 1244 (BRN). When one or more of the following conditions occur, the INC DIM 2 lamps will be active:
• The interior lamps switch is active.
• The park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates darkness
• The ignition switch is in the RUN position and the ambient light sensor indicates darkness
• A Class 2 message is received from the body control module (PZM) indicating that the courtesy lamps are active.
Dimming
The instrument cluster controls all of the interior dimming functions. The instrument cluster receives an ambient light level input from the ambient light sensor and determines whether it is light or dark. If the ambient light sensor is inoperative, the instrument cluster will assume a condition of darkness. Dimming of the VF displays is only allowed when the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the park lamps are on, and the ambient light sensor indicates darkness. If all conditions for the VF dimming are met, the instrument cluster uses the input from the potentiometer in the headlamp switch to determine the level of dimming. The dimming level is sent to the radio (IRC), the cellular telephone (PHN), and the climate control panel (CCP) via a Class 2 message. These modules then adjust the dimming level of their VF display. The instrument cluster provides dimming control of the incandescent lighting through the INC DIM 1 and INC DIM 2 outputs. The instrument cluster provides dimming control of the electronic PRNDL LED through CKT 1382 (PPL/WHT). The dimming level will very based on the potentiometer in the headlamp switch whenever the parklamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates darkness, regardless of the position of the ignition switch.

No light on display

The power wire may have come loose in the connection, or the fuse has blown for some reason. Check your connections and fuse.
