I suspect, if you haven't got it working on the AC adaptor when this happens, that maybe the battery is low power. If it does it when the AC adaptor is being used then I think you are right, the DVD ROM is faulty.
Remove the battery and AC adaptor.
Remove the Memory cover.
There is a singel screw that holds the DVD drive bay in. Remove the screw and pull the drive out.
Replace the drive with and IDENTICAL model and that should be that.
Hope this helps.

Toshiba satellite 1805 s204 "media test failure, check cable"....

Did you install the windows system etc? If not boot from the system restore cd and it should work. If it will not boot from the cd-rom then more damage was done then was apparent and the unit would require factory qualified repair. Be sure of the cost before committing to repair since on laptops sometimes it is cheaper to replace the repair. Good Luck

Where is the CMOS battery?

On Toshiba, one of three places. Under a panel on the bottom, under the battery, or under the keyboard, look for a battery resembling a large watch battery, some are in pouches with two wires leading to a connector. Here, try one of these links, you may be able to find a breakdown diagram for your machine.

Step to how to replce cmos battery toshiba 1805-s254

Hi!
If you already found the cmos battery, then try to check its "rating" and size to accomodate inside the board. After that fix it as it should be.
