Yes, all IDE 2.5-inch disk-drives use the same pin-out. SATA-interface disk-drives have quite-different interfaces than IDE drives, but all SATA devices share a common interface.

Hi, probably any laptop made before 2002, will take this hard drive. to get any joy out of a second hand laptop, check you can upgrade the memory to a minimum of 1Gig, also try for a P4 processor; this will reward you in the long term, for speed and reliability.
Any brand-new ATA hard-drive (you probably won't find any new hard-drive smaller than 80GB) will be compatible. Pay a few extra dollars for a 7200 RPM drive (rather than 4200 or 5400 RPM).
if it is the original battery, it most likely needs replacement. Portable batteries have a expected life of 300 to 500 recharge cycles (18 to 24 mos) If a new battery does not charge, then a motherboard replacement is warranted.
is the crackling noise constant?
if so, your hard drive is lockup on the bootup. you have to get a new hard drive.
or you can try to reformat the hard drive, but I don't think that will help.
its overheating,you will have to check the heatsink if the filters on the end are blocked stopping air flow,and if the thermal grease on the processor is not totally dry.

Laptop Video cards are usually more expensive and harder to take out that Desktop ones. Usually involve taking apart the whole laptop. Most of the time they can not be upgraded.
If you suspect a defect I recommend bringing to a local repair center for diagnosis.
