I have a dell vostro 1310 laptop that will not boot. It first tried to recover but couldn't and would just shut down. Now I cannot even enter anything with a command prompt. I think my hard drive is fried since I tried reinstalling the oerating system (Windows Vista Home) and cannot find the hard drive or dvd drive. If it is the hard drive I will need to have instructions on replacing the hard drive. Help please!

Dell site should have info regarding the removal of old drive. Then install new drive in its place and install the recovery disks that you got or made. Hopefully the new drive will come with the software to prepare the drive for loading although some of the newer OS disks will do it for you.

SOURCE: disk drive not found

It sounds like the hard drive went bad. Can you see the hard drive in the bios at all? When you try and boot the computer does it say drive not found? Try booting from the vista cd and see if you can start a new installation. If you can do the intallation the drive is ok. If not the hard drive is bad.

SOURCE: Cannot dismount Drive to format.

Its better to go into DOS directly then trying things thru windows since its not working properly.

Try using a win98 boot and you'll go to a A:\

When you get there type in FDISK and what you want to do is to delete all your partitions. Then once you do that go ahead and create a primary partition and when thats all done, let the system reboot and let it get back to the A:\

Once there type in this command:

format c: /u/c

As long as your hard drive is still good this will do a unconditional format while checking the clusters of the hard drive as well to make sure they are good. If there is problems it will either stop at a certain percentage or it will tell you "trying to recover file allocation table".

This is a good way of making sure your hard drive is completely clean before reinstalling anything back onto the hard drive.

Once this goes thru then you can put in your Operating System CD and when it gets to the point where it asks you to format then chooose Quick at that point and follow the prompts.

Hope this helps you out.

SOURCE: Can't start windows: Hard Drive - No drive detected

The laptop cannot see/detect the hard drive. This means the hard drive is faulty or it needs reaeating.
Remove the hard drive and inserting again, then reboot the laptop, if it still cannot detect the hard drive then it is faulty.
You need to purchase a new one and install Windows on the new hard drive.

I am unable to do a factory image restore with my Dell Vostro 1310 laptop. I am unable to select repair in advanced boot menu.

Hi,
You can't select repair from advanced boot menu without CD. If you purchase your laptop with pre-loaded (ORIGINAL) operating system you can restore by pressing F11 while restaring. It'll restore your system as same as you by from showroom. If it is a pirated software you need to insert bootable CD of Windows 7 or whatever you need & restart your system. Press F10 or change first boot device in BIOS mode. Select DVD drive. It'll continue installation...

Some laptops can select an alternate boot device when you power up the laptop and then press F10 or F12.
When the laptop first boots up the display will show briefly the Function key you you need to press to go into the BIOS and/or the alternate boot device.

If you wish to FORMAT your hard drive so you can re install the OS.
Put your Windows disc into the CD/DVD drive, boot the computer and press F2 (if that does not work try CTRL+ALT and enter) to enter the bios. Change the boot order to boot from the CD drive first.

Follow the onscreen instructions to Install the OS, you should get the option to delete the existing partitions and then to FORMAT.
