Hi! recently joined playstation network. completed sign in etc. can browse online too. but when i wish to play online it gets stuck 'connecting to matchmaking server' etc

hi my says: PLAYSTATION network requires an Online ID for online play.

The Playstation network is down for maintenance at the moment so no-one can sign in or play games online. You will have to wait until the maintenance is complete before you can sign in. There is no word yet on how long this will take so please be patient will Sony works on the problem.
Don't worry as this has nothing to do with the consoles themselves.

PlayStation Network is offline for scheduled maintenance from 16:05 on Wednesday 9 March 2011 until 03:00 on Thursday 10 March 2011, GMT.

During the maintenance, you will be unable to access the following services:

PlayStation Store on PS3 and PSP.
PlayStation Network Account Management.
PlayStation Network Account Registration.
In addition, you will not be able to sign in to PlayStation Network from eu.playstation.com. If you wish to play online during the maintenance, please ensure you sign in to PSN before 16:05 on Wednesday 9 March 2011.

During this maintenance, you can continue to collect in-game trophies and these will be updated on your profile once PlayStation Network is back up and running.

Firstly, ensure the console is connected to the Network via an Ethernet cable or WiFi. You will then have to access the Playstation Network via the main menu and create a new profile, i.e. User Name, email address.

Once all complete, you can then tick the small box to `Automatically Log On Each Time You Connect To The Network`. This will save you having to type in your User Name etc each time you play online.

It usually means your internet is to slow if you have satillite internet then it wont work.

Hello,
for playing online with the PS3 you have at first to create a PSN (Playstation Network) Account. You can do this easylie right on the PS3 at the "Account-Management".

After creating an Account you have to log on with this account to the Playstation Network (This function also can be found in the XMB "Account" Menu.

When you log on for the first time you can easy mark the "Automatic Log-In to PSN" checkbox so that the PS3 already log on to the Network. I prefer this because it is much easier than always log in manual - This Setting is optional (Just as you want it to be set).

After doing the Steps above you should be able to play online without any problem.
