Does your DVD allow you to change viewing modes onto another TV. If so is it turned on?

Sometimes portable DVD players allow you to switch to a secondary TV for playback. When this happens it disables the primary screen on the portable DVD player.

Thats usually the culprit as to why that happens.

If you have that feature on your portable DVD player you should check it out.

If its a button you can press on it until it appears on the correct screen.

If its a switch, move the lever to the other position.

Need the car adaptor for this model CyberHome CH-LDV712. Radio Shack said it is a 10 Volt and they do not carry it.

Reading from the tag attached to my original CyberHome car adaptor included with the CH-LDV712:

Input: 12 VDC
Output: DC 9V = 2.2 A
Model #: SEG-018

I don't know where the Radio Shack guy gets 10VDC from.

Screen does not lighy

If you look very closely, is there an extremely dark picture, or a solid black screen? If it's an extremely dark picture, you just need a new backlight. If it's a black screen, you either have a bad connection (broken, shorted or unplugged cable), or need a new LCD. Let me know, and we'll go from there.

If there is any picture whatsoever playing, you likely have a bad backlight. If there's absolutely nothing, it's likely a dead player

I got an idea. Why don't you take into Best Buy and have the Geek Squad look at it. See if it's the player of find the button to change the display were looking for. They can show you where it is.
