Make sure the camera is on auto focus-mode as compared to a manual mode. Also make sure that auto-focus ILLUMINATOR is switched on, and also not covered by your fingers when in use.

My fix for this would be to purchase a memory card reader and an enter level Photoshop imaging program software. The memory card reader to purchase is the one that does all the camera memory cards. Photoshop Elements 5 is one of the programs I use on my PC and it was only $120.00.
Doing this will step around any camera firmware and computer software incompatibilities AND you can use this for any camera memory card so when you do update your camera the software issue is a non issue
Well, the EOS 10D is not a 35mm camera (that would be film, not digital) but there is software for it on the Canon website that you can download at THIS LINK
Well replace it by all means - what does the Manual have to say about this particular battery
It is usual for a full manual to be on a PDF file on the software disk - have you checked this out?
If all else fails- Canon Technical Support is the next stop
I shoot with a 10D and at first I thought I might have a problem. Now I think I just wasn't using it correctly. I read a lot of posts on dpreview about how to use the autofocus correctly and that has helped me a lot.
