As I tell most people about brothers they can be a real pain. Usually try to take out the program and reinstall it. Make sure you allow the updates. Use ccleaner for registry cleaner...it is free from filehippo

Hi there. MNL refers to manual fax receive. You must manually answer to receive the fax. I normally have it set to "auto" to receive automatically. Use mnl mode if you have fax set up on a normal voice telephone line and not a dedicated fax line.
MNL indicates the fax is set for manual reception, you have to press "start" to receive the fax. There should be a button on the control panel for reception mode, press the button until it says auto or fax or fax only. If you do not have the manual, you can go to brother-usa.com and look for downloads.
Setting the Ring Delay
The Ring Delay sets the number of times the
MFC rings before it answers in Fax Only or
Fax/Tel mode. If you have extension
phones on the same line as the MFC or
subscribe to the telephone company’s
Distinctive Ring service, keep the Ring Delay
setting of 4.

Your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode function reduces power consumption while the machine is idle. You can adjust how long your Brother machine is idle (between 00 and 99 minutes) before Sleep Mode is initiated. Please note that the default setting is 00 minutes, and the timer automatically resets itself after the Brother machine receives a fax,receives data from your PC, or makes a copy. To adjust your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode setting, please follow these steps:

3. Press the MENU/SET key to confirm your choice.
4. Press the STOP/EXIT key to exit the menu.
NOTE: If you frequently print, copy, or fax, set the idle time long enough to insure that you will not always have to wait for the Brother machine to warm up.
Not familar with MNL, does sound like you have the receive mode set to manual. set to auto anser or answer machine. In manual mode the phone will ring until you tell the fax to receive. In auto mode after so may ring which you set, the fax will pick up...

The machine is set for manual (MNL) answering - hit "receive mode" until is says "fax only" or "Fax/tel" etc. depending on what mode you want the machine to work in again. Just resolved the same problem on mine. Patricia
The sleep mode is only a power save mode. You may not have the machine in the correct fax receive mode. If the machine is on a line by itself it needs to be set to fax only, if line is shared with a telephone it needs to be in fax/telephone, if you share the machine with an answering machine it needs to be in TAD mode, and so forth.
Each time you press the MODE key it will change the receive mode. Most people hit this key by mistake and change the MODE and the unit will not pick up calls. Press the MODE key until you are in the correct mode.
To make sure the machine will print, press reports and then the 1, this will print a help list. If the help list prints you know that the machine works. Then check to make sure the machine is in the correct fax receive mode.
