There should be a jumper on the hard drive to select between 3G and 1.5G speeds. It appears that your MB only supports the 1.5G speed.

BIOS won't recognise SATA hdd.BIOS is Pheonix-Award BIOS v6. 00PG. Do you think I need to update the BIOS?

Hi, according to your mobo manual it supports SATA1/SATA2 hard drives so it's recommended to update BIOS, the latest I found it has release date 2006-06-29, you can find it in the folllowing link: Support For K8MM MSI Global

I've replaced the hard drive with a 160gb drive but windows xp pro installer says it's only 131070 MB. On another computer it says it's 152625 MB. Do I need to update the BIOS?

no, when u install a partition on a hdd it will not show when u scan for disk size from windows as the partitions are seperated to keep it safe from many common issues. it looks like you may have installed windows again once it was in the new computer or just allocated additional space to the partition......dont worry, if your hdd gets full, windows will suggest to automatically slim down the partition for you

Reinstall OS and all drivers, if not working, then try with a different OS or search for updated drivers.

I purchased an ex lease acer travelmate 6592 and I now find the hdd is password protected, I have tried another hard drive but the computer does not recognise either drive.How do I get around this problem...

There is software available to remove HDD passwords, or a computer store may be able to remove it.

You do not need an OS installed in order to update the BIOS; you can use a floppy disk and a BIOS update program to update the BIOS.

Sometimes, you have to restart the computer a few times to get the BIOS to recognize another HDD. You could install the other HDD, and try to boot with a bootable CD with partitioning capabilities

what size capacity is the new hard drive - and what is the bios on your laptop able to recognise ?
is it an upto date laptop ?
some old bios's unable to see newer larger drives....
try updating the bios of your laptop

or use a hdd prep programme
