Try looking at the remote LED through a cell-phone/digital camera's view finder. If you see it blinking when you press some button on the remote, it means that remote is fine and there is some problem with the Infrared receiver of you television.
Good Luck!
It is not likely the view finder is broken, because it is deep inside the camera. There can be many reasons why you can't use it as it should. Did you know you can adjust the brightness of the viewfinder and the display separately? It is in the manual page 31. And if you are with the manual (still online available) have a look on page 16 too.
When the camera does not give the image to the view finder, it also could be an electronic problem, because switching in the camera goes along electronic paths.
The view finder is the little window on the top left of the camera. If you want to use the display as a view finder, you have to press the button with the camera logo. It is called the life view mode. you use the same button to switch off the display. Be aware using the display, will drain the batteries quicker. Somewhat faster then with modern cameras.
see page 19 of the manual.
With the camera on, have you tried pressing the DISP button once? It's the lower left button on the back of the camera. It manually turns the display on or off as desired to save batteries (you can then aim through the optical viewfinder).
You might try adding an external view finder that is close to the FD-95 picture size.
A lot of old cameras have them and it could also be used for sports as well, it could
be added with Velcro or some other type of mounting. I am working on this problem myself. Good luck
