Hi gregclark56,

If you are trying to setup a Router for the first time, you can type your own Key as the WEP Key (You will need this key when you connect to this Wireless Network). The WEP Keys turns the Network to Security Enabled Network. If you're trying to connect to a Wireless Router that has already been setup, you will need to contact the Network Administrator/Owner for the WEP Key.

Hope this helps.

I was trying to manually the router up as wireless.

Hi,

If you want to connect to the router wirelessly you need to know the SSID or the Name of the Router (Nework Name) and the Network Key or Wep Key. The Default Wep Key is the 10 digit key located on the bottom sticker of the router. It is near the Bar Code. You can also personalize the Network Key by simly accessing the router. I've listed the steps on how to access the router incase the Network Key on the sticker is not working.

  • Open a Web browser and type http://gateway.2wire.net or http://192.168.1.254; the 2Wire Home page opens.
  • Click the Home Networking tab at the top of the 2Wire Home page.
  • Click on Wireless Settings. then click EDIT SETTINGS located on the right panel.
  • Here you will be able to fine the setting for your wireless connection
  • You can change the SSID, Wireless Channel, Wireless Security, and Network Key
  • Connect to your SSID by clicking on START then click on Connect To, Select your SSID then it will ask you for your Network Key. Type the Network Key then hit Connect

I have a 2wire gateway with 4 routers i have a desktop on it with a dsl cable line and two laptops on wireless going to the router. So that is 3 computers on the 2wire. I am trying to connect my third...

it depends on what type of OS that you are using. But the key point to this is that your computer was able to see your network, usually your network name would be 2wireXXX (the X is the 3 digit of your serial number of your 2wire modem or router. if it is asking for password or wep key. the wep key for your 2wire is the number enclosed in a bracket, that is usually 10 numbers below the serial number

My usb adapter (2wire 802.11g usb wireless adpter) is having problems.

you cant change the wep key on the upstairs pc unless you change it on the 2wire 1st. the pc wep key has to match whatever the 2wire has it set to. go to the 2wire router settings throught the downstairs pc that is working to be able to see what the wep key is set to, then when you get the key or set a new one enter that key into the upstairs pc.

In most cases the default wireless settings are sufficient for normal home use.
The WEP or Network key is located on the bottom of the residential Gateway, within brackets [ ]
