Last night we had a power outage, it lasted 8 hours. The HP media center m7060n, is connected to a powers surge protector, but today I tried to switch it on and nothing, not even a light on the power switch. The back of the computer has a flickering green light when the power cable is attached, this stops eventually when that is removed. There is no movement from the fan or noise at all when i do try to power up.
Yes indeed thanks for the advice peanut. I called theGeek squad at Bestbuy and they wanted $300-500 to do the work if it was the psu(which HP would ship to me for 55), so after I picked myself up off the floor, I called circuit city and spoke to the firedog guys (who my friend has used with much satisfaction)and they have said 40 for the new PSU ( if that is what is needed) and $30 to install it. Am thinking even if it is something more I will take it to the folk who were honest from the getgo ..lol..

In addition to my comment regarding the fee, I just cannot fathom why there would be such a huge difference in a fee from one place to another, it baffled me, as I bought my pc from Bestbuy and as soon as I said it was about 2 yrs old and no warranty remained, out came that huge sum quote. HP tech had literally told me to self install and they would send me the part out. But I thought I was doing the sensible thing having it installed by professionals at the place of original purchase.

OK FIRST A POWER SURGE PROTECTOR WILL ONLY PROTECT YOU 7 % OF THE TIME, WHICH YOU JUST REALIZED. SO YOU NEED TO BUY A BATTERY BACKUP ALSO KNOWN AS A UPS.... I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. BRING YOUR PC TO BEST BUY AND THEY WILL TEST YOUR POWER SUPPLY, IF IT TESTS OUT OK THEN YOU BLEW SOMETHING IN YOUR MOTHERBOARD. GET A BATTERY BACKUPS/UPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wierd i think they misunderstood you at best buy... they install Power Supplys for 39 dolllers as well CC, price prolly starts around 50....I think they misunderstood..... hmm o well as long as it works is my saying...Wierd i think they misunderstood you at best buy... they install Power Supplys for 39 dolllers as well CC, price prolly starts around 50....I think they misunderstood..... hmm o well as long as it works is my saying...

It sounds like you have a board that is not booting at all. Remove everything from the board except the system RAM and CPU and switch it on. If it boots now, shut it down and then replace each individual item one at a time, booting the machine after each item is refitted/connected until you fit something that prevents the machine from booting. Pay special attention to system RAM sticks by removing them/it and refitting it as bad connections in the RAM socket can also cause a boot failure but removing and refitting the sticks usually cures this issue.
On HP computers, I believe that this means that the power supply or the motherboard is bad. I assume that the outage was due to the thunderstorm and you may have received a surge. In your manual, there should be diagnostic light codes where they will outline the exact meaning. Again, to the best of my knowledge, this means that there is a bad power supply or a motherboard.
if you can open your desktop..try to replace the ide cable of the DVD/Cdrom it might be deffective.before you open your pc just make sure that the power is off.after changing the ide cable of your dvd the system will automatically detect your drive.if you got same problem again try to consult your hardware vendor to claim your warranty parts and service.good luck
