E197 Error Codes caused by electrical noise.
DETAILS:
The error code E197-0000 (laser scanner motor communication error) may be indicated during the wait state upon power-on. Cause: The tube protecting the crimp terminal on the end of the bias cable that is connected to the transfer guide in the rear side of the Registration - Transfer Assembly [1] moves downward, and the uncovered metal portion of the terminal comes into contact with the screw [2]. This causes electrical noise, leading to E197-0000.
Canon error E197 0000 is a printer engine communication error.
check for firm connections on the DC controller PCB and image processor PCB. If fails to help try replacing the two printed circuit boards mentioned above in that order.
good luck ..
Hello,
the error is E197-000 Printer engine communication error
Erroneous communication between the DC controller PCB and image processor PCB was detected.
- Check the connectors of the DC controller PCB and image
processor PCB.
- Replace the DC controller PCB for normal connection.
- Replace the image processor PCB.
The part number for the DC controller PCB is FM2-8365-000.

I have a Canon MF6500 Series and received this System Error E197 error while printing a document from Word. I was low on paper in the tray but not out so I refilled the paper tray and turned the printer off for about 30 seconds and it worked fine after that. I guess I'm lucky.
I believe a E197 error refers to a power problem relating to the fuser. I would remove any covers to access the fuser, remove it and reseat it and any nearby connectors.
