Hello friend, User Manual for 20070512 close enough ? near the bottom of this page for download https://masterbuilt.com/40-inch-electric-digital-smokehouse.html
I had this exact same problem with my Masterbuilt Smokehouse even when brand new. I notice there is some variability in the space between the top surface of the heating element and the bottom surface of the wood chip box. I measured about 1/4 inch between the two surfaces when the heating element was seated bottomed out and touching the wire grill below it. What I did to fix the problem was to gently (make sure everything is completely cold before doing this) lift up the end of the heating element farthest away from where it enters the enclosure just a little bit so that when you put the woodchip box in where it is supposed to go, the top surface of the heating element will now be in contact with the bottom surface of the woodchip box. This arrangement allows much greater heat to heat the wood chips during the part of the heating cycle when the heating element is on (naturally the heating element cycles on and off to regulate whatever temperature your are targeting for your food being cooked). Now, because of this contact, every time the heating element comes on, enough heat will enter the woodchip box to keep the chips ignited. My next step is I am going to put a small 1/4 inch thick piece of metal beneath the heating element and the rack that is under it to force the heating element to stay sitting 1/4 inch higher so that it is always in contact with the lower surface of the woodchip box. Making these improvements allowed me to continuously get smoke when the big smoke box was at 225 degrees F. Without making this fix, the unit would stop producing smoke at 225. Hope this makes sense and helps you.
Hi hickoxt4076...
Check your electric heating element with an Volt ohm meter and make sure you are getting continuity thru it...if not then replace the element because it is faulty.
Be sure to remove the wires from the unit before checking with the Volt ohm meter
Also be sure to check and make sure you have electricity going to the heating element.

Since the - - -holes @ Masterbuilt told me they don't sell them, and after extensive seraches on the net, I found a company that is making me one for $37.50 plus shipping. (As of August 31, 2011) Contact: [email protected] and tell him you want to order a heating element identical to one he is making for Lelys. (The mountting plate may be a little different, but all you'll have to do is drill new holes in the new mounting plate.
You probably have a bad heating element, Turn the unit on then turn your digital heat to 275 and open door the heating element should become cherry red. If it doesn't then you have a bad heating element. If you do not get a digital readout then you probably have a bad digital control panel. Both of those parts can be replaced, however i do not know the price for either of those parts. If you have neither working then you may have a short or broken wire that is not making a full curcuit. Good Luck
Hi,
Here is a pdf of the smoker book and on page 4 there is a parts list with the cust. service number to order replacement parts...there is an element kit listed there, that is what you need.
I experienced the same problem. My heating element was not working. After a Continuity Test, the Heating Coil was dead and needs replacement. I asked Masterbuilt if any heating coil replacement parts were available. They said "no", but they could offer a discounted sale on a new Smoker for about $175.00. I am still looking. A local appliance dealer said the internet was the most likely place to find one. After looking on the internet, I can't seem to find one yet. If you know of any, please let me know. Call (616) 772-1332 and ask for Bob. Thanks
I just bought a new Masterbuilt Smoker by default two weeks ago I borrowed a friend’s to smoke about 30lb. of Salmon to then can. Ran the smoker every day for three day. ON my last batch the heating element would not work. Talk about Frustrated! The Smoker was only 2 yrs. old. Knowing I borrowed I felt I had to replace. So online to Cabelas and I ordered my buddy a new smoker and had it shipped. I then found this website... GOT TO LOVE the internet. I saw many other people had the same problem. Found an Answer... The Problem was one of the connector to the heating element was poor quality and if you don't clean your smoker on a regular basis. The heat and moister caused the small copper connector to corrode and the wire to come loose. I took a wood chisel and cut off all the rivets on the back. I was then able to pull the back off with no damage and access the small box in the lower back. I found the connector. Went to the hardware store and bought a replacement for .75 cents. A pair of wire crimpers and the problem was fixed. I also bought ½ inch Sheet metal screws to secure the back it was good as new. So I returned the smoker to my buddy and kept the new one. When it arrived I saw Masterbuilt has since fixed the problem and provided an access panel to the element and connectors. Mike in Alaska [email protected]
