Hey jbulldogst,

According to information provided by the manufacturer, the Gateway 310S (2900621) uses a 4-bay micro tower.

If you'd like any additional information on the original factory specifications, I've provided a link to Gateway's support page below:

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/310_Series/2900621/2900621sp4.shtml

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Gateway dx300 hard drive

Gateway DX300 Desktop PC is a series.

Could be a Gateway DX300MC, or DX300QS, or DX300S, or DX300X,

http://support.gateway.com/support/supinfo/index.asp?pg=2&file=DX300series.html

Fortunately all models in the series use a SATA harddrive.

[ Gateway DX300X Desktop PC used as an example,

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/DX300/1008555/1008555nv.shtml

In the list click on - Components
On this page scroll down to the bold subheading - Harddrives

All models came with a Western Digital harddrive, but it doesn't matter what the harddrive manufacturer is, that you use ]

What size in GB amount? Depends on what you want. I myself wouldn't go more than 320GB.
That is because your anti-virus program has to sift through the harddrive.

The larger the harddrive, the longer it takes.

For more capacity, I would install a 1TB harddrive into an external enclosure, and use it connected to the computer, with it's USB cable.
(It will also come with an additional external power supply)

But that is just me.

Bear in mind that a new harddrive has no Operating System on it.
You have to purchase a genuine copy of Windows, and install it.
(This is if your harddrive presently on that Gateway is bad)

[ Microsoft makes one Master disk. From it all GENUINE copies are made, and sold to the consumer ]

Can the 310S PC Desktop Use HDDs running at 7200 RPM?

If there are unused connectors on the hard drive ribbon cables, and unused molex power plugs, then yes. Be sure to securely mount the drives in the case. Also check the jumper settings for all drives.

CD drive trying to play CD when drive is empty

Apparently your laptop still thinks there is a cd to play. Be sure you closed down all your programs. I am assuming that you already logged off and shut your computer down and restarted. It could be something as simple as your sensor that detects the cd being in place and just a little dust. Use some clean compressed air that comes in a can and can be bought like at Radio Shack or electronic supply house. Put the nozzle on and blow out any dust that may be in there. Power down and then restart your computer. That should take care of your problem.

Computer will not start

When handling motherboards and any sensitive ICs you really have to be careful and discharge any static electricity you may be carrying by touching the case before handling even with the power off. Double check all your power connections and especially the logic cables going to the harddrive. It seems to me that one of those connections is not quite right. Good luck. and God bless.
