I think you must have the Back Track Point 5 you mean? There is no device called a Back Track 5.. so assuming you have the Point 5 model you want this manual here, it shows you on the third page the position to have the back in so you can remove the back and replace the batteries, just scroll to the third page:

If that does not your look like your model you must have a version of the original Back Track which can be found here... on page 2 of this manual it shows you how to take off the back to replace the battery:

Thanks much, let me know if you have more questions or if somehow those don't cover it. Just reply here.
Tim
I see, so you have unlocked it as shown and it does not budge at all? The back cover should just pop off, you may need to pry it with something. It sounds like somehow it may have really "fused" together due to heat and moisture. If you can't get it with a little bit of wiggling and possibly a small bladed flat head screwdriver, then definitely don't damage the unit, but instead just call Bushnell, they will probably have you send it in to them so they can work on it, and if they can't get it they should replace the unit at no cost to you. Their number is (800) 423-3537.
Thanks so much,
Tim

I need to open a Backtrack 5. Not the backtrack.
I can read the directions. I just can't get it to open.
All you did is send me the instructions for the back track, not the baxk track 5.
I have a Back Track 5, not a Back Track.
I can read the directions, it just wont open.
I have the Point 5, and I have those instructions. What do you do when you still can't get it open? I have read several complaints about this, but no solutions.
