You could try iphoto library manager available from http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ you can try before you buy and it may repair the iphoto library. Hope this helps.

just had the same problem, check the connection going into the top part of the scanner at the back and restart which ever program your using... got mine sorted
Suddenly since last week I can not scan to my E Mail or iphoto anything. It simply says -" sorry scanner can not be initialized.
Error communicating with scanner
I was able to contact Canon via e-mail about the problem and they acutally responded! :)
Apparently all you have to do is disconnect and reconnect the scanner from the lid. Apparently, because the lid has its own scanning hardware and if your lid and scanner have become disconnected, the software won't give you the negative/positive options. Anyway, did the disconnect and connect thing and it worked!
Hi, You can't scan directly into iPhoto however the software that came with your HP scanner should have something that can. If you don't have the software you will need to download it from the much easier to navigate HP.com site. Once you have scanned them using HPScan you can transfer them into iPhoto by drag and drop from app to app or Finder to iPhoto.

The link will take you to the HP page where the handle for this problem is detailed. I did every step as listed and downloaded updated driver / software for the 4315. It works!
