OUr son's ps 3, bought in 2008 all of a sudden has stopped reading his games. he also tried loading a movie it won't play either. Sony wants $163 to ship it back to fix as warranty is expired. I wonder if it is the lazer reader. Is there a way to fix this at home without having to send it back to sony?

well if another Disc works (try a movie or something) it means that the disc itself is damaged. Now I'm betting that the other disc dont work eighter, This is because the rom has reached its life span. Replacing the rom is the solution to your problem.
This is a typical indicator of a problem with the Bluray drive or more specifically the optical laser on the drive which is failing to read the disc. Sony charge $150 for this repair if the console is outside warranty.
You could try cleaning the lens on the laser as this can work sometimes but this requires you to open the console and most often the lens is faulty and needs to be changed. For more information on the lens and how to access it either to change it or clean it please see this FixYa Tip.
1.You Should Try to clean your disks
2.put one in and go to games or videos depending on what u r doing and if your ps3 detects there is a game in there press triangle on the disk icon and select play

try playing a blu-ray movie if it wouldn't play blu-ray movies or PS 3 games you laser is bad. I you need help changing it I can email you detailed instructions.
no this is not normal try to play your games with out go online if it still freezen or the icon for the cd is not there or if is not reading games,bluray movies dvd's anymore your problem can be with the bluray laser lens let me know what it does after you try to play a game or better yet try to wach a bluray movie and see if it stop reading the movie after about 30 mins or less if this happen your tv screen stays black but if you push the PS logo the ps3 ask you if you want to stop playing the disk select yes and your icon for the movie is probably gone this is what happend if your bluray laser is bad it is easier to check this with a bluray movie like a mention here let me know if this is your problem and I have a solution for you thanks
