Our Sanyo bar fridge is not cold enough despite turning up the dial. Milk has curdled within days because it is just nor cold enough. Is this a fixable problem and what does this indicate, poor freon? Is our bar fridge on the blitz? It also accumulates frost in the upper right hand corner of the fridge. Can it be fixed? Melody

SOURCE: problem with sanyo tv

OK this is just strange but - I have a remote for a RCA Digital to Analog box and if I hit the 'input' key a couple of times it seems to clear the number from the screen.  Can't find any place to do this in the standard menu - and the original remote is long gone.....  Likely as not there is a remote with a button doing strange things just like this,

SOURCE: fridge & freezer not cooling. Meat thawing

If the refrigerator isn't cool, you need to answer some questions, then see if the compressor is running.

First, answer these questions: Is the refrigerator completely dead? If so, see “It's stopped completely.” Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help. If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

The compressor The Thermostat The overload, relay, or capacitor The defrost timer The condenser fan motor

What temperature should I keep my refrigerator at if the house is going to be really warm? My air will be off. I do live in Arizona.

You just need to keep adjusting until you find what works on the dial for you. The liquids should be cold to the touch, and it should NOT freeze any of the produce or eggs...if it's too cold, turn the refrigeration down, ...if the milk is spoiling too soon and the cheese is going bad, turn it a little colder. It takes a while to learn what works, but once you find out, just leave it alone.

Why does milk spoil

What's Milk Got?
The main nutrients of milk are lactose, (the milk sugar some people are intolerant of), proteins of various sorts, and butterfat, all sloshing around in about 85 to 90% water. It total, milk has about 100,000 different compounds in it, and you could probably find a microbe that likes every one.
Soxhletization?
In the old days, if you got milk, you could also get Typhoid and Scarlet fever, Diphtheria, Tuberculosis or various diarrheal diseases. Mmmm. Pasteurization is named for Louis Pasteur who, in 1859, showed how heating up wine or beer would keep it from going cloudy because of microbes. Franz Von Soxhlet, a German agricultural chemist with impressive sideburns and a great interest in milk, was actually the first to suggest sterilizing milk for infants in 1886. Nowadays, it is usually heated to 71 C and then rapidly cooled to kill off bacteria and other microbes.
pH, duh
Bacteria tend to get a lot of bad press. But lactic acid bacteria occur naturally on plants like grasses and can easily end up in milk. They ferment lactose at room temperature and turn it into lactic acid. More acid means more hydrogen ions, a lower pH and a sour taste. Lower pH change the structure of proteins like casein, which gives milk its whiteness, so it curdles into clumps called curds. The leftover yellowy liquid is whey. Apparently, little Miss Muffet was just having unpasteurized milk that had been left out for a while. Microbes like Lactococcus lactis (nominated the Wisconsin "State Microbe") get added back to the milk after pasteurization to make dairy products like yogurt and cheese.
Making Scents of a New Weird Odour
So the sourness is one thing, and curdling is another. Smell is yet another milk phenomenon. After the milk container has been opened, mystery microbes can get back in. And if you leave it out, they can reproduce more quickly. Other bacteria break down milk proteins that result in smelly byproducts. Still others can break down the butterfat that smells bad. And some molds can use lactic acid, break the proteins or attack the fat and give off unappetizing aromas.

Got a hotpoint ffa97, freezer was still cold and no alarm had gone off to say that that there had been a power cut yet the fridge temp had risen enough to curdle milk??\r\ntemp gauge was still showing...

Milk can sometimes curdle in a working fridge. But it does sound like your defrost system may be malfunctioning. Can you empty your freezer and inspect the defrost system behind the air circulator fan?

I know that defrost elements sometimes go bad and the controllers can pop too. You should check your operators manual and see how to put the fridge into manual defrost. *(it usually involves turning the fridge light on and off by hand. See if the freezer drains during manual defrost. If you have lots of food that dries out in a frost free unit the moisture contains a lot of contaminants that can plug the defrost drain. Which leads to a blocked air passage between the freezer and fridge sides.

You might want to get a small backup fridge for a while to run this down.
Or just use up the food in your fridge before running the tests.

Good luck and be careful.

Fridge not cold enough to hold milk resulting in the milk becoming sour. Fridge temperature is 10 degrees C how can we make it cooler? We have already set the temperature to the dial 7.

You could do the simple things like clean the dust and stuff around the compressor condenser. Check the condenser motor. Good air flow improves performance and cost nothing to fix. Of course if you are experiencing a defrost problem the air from below gets choke out with ice buildup around the evaporator area. If you have frost on the backside of the freezer section changes is you have a broken defrost heater.

Whirlpool Estate series fridge/bottom freezer no longer gets cold

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
