I refilled the black ink cartridge and the instructions with the refill kit had this notice: "After refilling, the chips have to be turned off by pushing the reset button on the printer for 5 seconds." This model has an on/off button, but not a reset. After turning the printer off, it is still showing the black ink level low. Is there a way to reset the chip in the ink cartridge?

Follow these steps: 1. Buy an Epson ink refill kit. A refill kit gives you all the tools you need to refill Epson ink cartridges. Kits typically include a syringe, rivets, ink, and instructions on how to refill the cartridge. You can find Epson ink refill kits on the Printer Filling Station along with instructions for each specific model (see Resources). 2. Cover your workspace with a paper towel and fill up the syringe with the ink color you need. Epson refill kits will either include black ink or the color combination cyan, yellow and magenta. On average, you'll need 10 ml of black ink or 5 ml of color ink for Epson ink cartridges. 3. Find the rubber seals on the back of the Epson ink cartridge. Insert the rivets into each seal. 4. Empty the contents of the syringe into the Epson ink cartridge. You'll want to perform this action slowly in order to avoid spilling or overfilling the cartridge. 5. Remove the rivets. Use tape to cover the holes you made in the ink cartridge. Return the ink cartridge to the printer. Allow the printer to go through several print cycles in order to ensure that the Epson printer operates properly.
When a non professionals refill there cartridges air bubbles are left in cartridges durring refilling process so when cartridge need ink to heat and spray it on paper has air and that time is when is getting overheat it and need to be replaced

Refills are not possible for this cartridge type yet. There is a chip on the cartridge that needs to be reset or replaced for the cartridge to function. Any chips for sale on the internet are technically violating patent law. Any refill kit that tells you to take the chip off your cartridge and place it on their refill is swindling you. Once the chip says the cartridge is empty it WILL NOT print, no matter how much ink is actually left. I would wait until a reputable refiller like Cartridge World or Office Depot offers refills for this cartridge before you try to fill it at home.
on most printers there is a chip on the ink cartridge and it must be replaced when you refill the cartridge other wise the chip tells the computer the cartridge is empty whether its full or not.. Wallgreens will fill you ink cartridges at a very low price ($15 for color / $10 for black) and they have the chips to replace
The ink your purchased is likely a cheap watered down version of what your printer is meant to take. You may notice that the ink smears when you rub the page directly after printing. Why you chose to use the blue and red ink to make black blows my mind. These refill kits are insanely cheap and buying the black could not have been much more. Not using black ink in the black cartridge would explain why your print is faded. Also, there is no way to reset the ink levels on this type of cartridge. As long as the printer still prints, just ignore the ink level indicator and print until the ink runs dry. I recommend Cartridge World for ink refills because they use high quality ink to manufacturer specified volumes while still saving you money.
By using Colorbyte's Imageprint software and their 'Phatte Black' cartridge....

I have not purchased it myself quite yet but im good friends with an Epson R&D guy who tested their system and highly recommends it.

HP #74 Cartridge Refill Instructions Black cartridge
Instructions
1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
2. Peal off the top label.
3. Fill the syringe with 20ml. of black ink.
4. Very S-L-O-W-L-Y inject ink into any hole (they all go to the same sponge, HP just used the same color mold for the black ink cartridges).
5. When finished, replace the top label or leave it off (it will make no difference in the printing).
6. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions. Or print the following pages: http://www.refillinstructions.com/black.htm for Black
For best results, leave cartridge in printer for 8 hours after refilling so the ink can saturate the entire sponge. A Refill Kit should include Ink plus the following: One 30cc Syringe
