Have you tried using it on another computer? if its a plug and play device and it works on another computer, the problem may be with your computer. you have to first try this device on another computer to see if it works or not.

Is it "slow" only on your computer, or also on some other computer?

If it _consistently_ is slow, then it probably has at least a one-year warranty. So, return it to where you bought it, and get it repaired/replaced.

Hard drive is not recognize by the computer

Both XP and Vista have this feature that requires that new installs of hardware be certified by Microsoft within anywhere from 30 to 60 days from installation.

Run an install (not a clean install which will wipe your data, mind you, but an install accomplished by installation disks, where you will be asked which kind of install you wish to accomplish, and you will be asked to register your software using your product key)

If you need additional information, I will be more than happy to assist you.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

Computer doesn't recognize my Lacie HD

From your description it sounds like you power adapter did indeed fail at first, but if the HDD spins now the adapter seems to be working fine at the moment. If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

Hard drive is not recognize by the computer

I found the solution to my problem that looks just exactly like this. My external hard drive stopped working and my computer said it was an "Unknown Device". I tried it on the other computer and it worked. That computer hadn't undergone a recent "update". Bloody hell...

But anyway, that one stopped working with it as well. Can you guess what happened?

Then I tried it on the Vista laptop. But before it could screw up, as well, I researched the driver for the drive. It was USBSTOR.SYS.

I copied it to the desktop, sent it to myself with email, and put it in the system32/drivers folder, and now my drive works on all my computers.

You generally shouldn't need a driver for these things, but that's essentially a lie. There should already BE a driver on most XP computers. But if it's not there? You're kinda screwed. I am trying to figure out how to host this one and link it, but in the meantime, just google USBSTOR.SYS

There are a few links to downloads out there.
