Hi!!
If you can turn the brush with your hand, the belt is either broken or off. Remove the bottom cover, (you'll need a Phillips screwdriver), to gain access to the brush compartment to replace belt.

Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

DC14s have two drivebelts that turn the brush bar - one connects the output of the motor to the clutch, the other connects the clutch to the brush bar.
You can check the latter simply by removing the sole plate and looking. Unfortunately the other belt is hidden under a plastic cover, so you cant see if it is okay or not without some dismantling. This cover is not easy to remove and requires a Torx driver to under the securing screws.
If, after removing the cover, the other belt is okay, then you have a faulty clutch. New clutches are available on eBay reasonably cheaply, but again good tools and DIY skills are required.
Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com which has some excellent info on dismantling and repairing a DC07 (the DC14 is very similar to the DC07), but unless you have access to such tools, and feel confident to tackle it, it's probably time to call Dyson or a Vacuum repairer.

If the brush roll isn't spinning fast enough it will not pick anything up off carpet leading many people to think they don't have suction. Check your belt.

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
If the vacuum cleaner brush is not spinning, the brushroll bearing might be jammed. Try removing the brushroll assembly and cleaning all hair, string, lint, etc. from the brushroll bearing. If that doesn't solve the problem the brushroll may need to be replaced.

My dyson dc17 turn on but doesn't turn

    Hi there,
I am sorry to hear you are having difficulty with your DC17. If the brush bar is not spinning it may be obstructed.
Please visit http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=956&product=DC17-ANIMAL for step by step instructions on how to inspect your brush bar and clear any obstructions that may be present.
Once you have carried out these steps you may need to reset your brush bar. To do this please plug your machine in, recline it as if you are preparing to vacuum a carpeted surface, turn your machine on and if the brush bar is not spinning push the silver button next to your power button one time. This should reset the brush and it should begin spinning immediately.
If you are still having difficulty with your machine please contact the Dyson US Helpline at 1-866-693-9766 or the Dyson UK Helpline at 0800 298 0298 so we can provide further assistance.
    Best wishes,

    My brush doesn't spin.

    Hi there,

DC14 models equipped with the brush control feature use a clutch which does not require replacement belts. If your DC14 is a model with brush control, recline the cleaner into the vacuuming position, and check that you have the brush control set to 'Carpets'. If the brushbar isn't rotating, please get in touch with us directly using the details provided below.

If your DC14 is a model without the brush control feature, you can find out how to replace the belt in our online guide:

For further assistance, please call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to establish the cause of the issue, and will be able to recommend the best course of action.

    Eats belts immediately

    HI There,

Usually when the belt breaks immediately, this indicates that your roller brush has gone bad and needs to be replaced. I have never seen the motor shaft being damaged and causing belts to break before. When the roller brush can't spin because it's bearings have worn out, the motor shaft continues to try and turn the belt, but since the belt can't spin the motor shaft at that point burns right through the belt.

To make sure that it's your roller brush, remove the brush from the vacuum cleaner, and hold it using just your two pointer finger tips, holding just the bearings caps at the end of the bar, and not the bar itself.

Try to spin the brush using your thumbs. Does the brush spin freely without resistance? It should spin completely around 3-4 times on each spin. If it doesn't spin, then your bar is bad.

If the brush doesn spin, and it continues to break belts, this means that the belt is being installed incorrectly, and is being pinched by the roller brush. Pull the belt forwards after installing to make sure the brush spins freely.

    Hope this helped you,

Got Dirt Devil Featherlite, keeps burning the belt out immediately and there is only one way to put the belt on...have put on 4 new belts.....what up?

    Hi There,

When a belt breaks immediately after installing it, this can ONLY mean one of two things. The first is that the belt was put back on incorrectly, and it may be pinched underneath of the beater bar. This would cause it to break immediately, but I seriously doubt after 4 belts that you put the belt on wrong all 4 times.

The second, and more probable cause is that your roller brush has gone bad. This could be why the belt broke in the first place. In order to test to make sure the brush is bad, unscrew the bottom plate, and remove the brush like you were changing the belt.

Hold the brush at the very end on both sides, using only your finger tips. While holding just the bearing caps, try spinning the bar with your thumbs. Does the brush spin freely in your hands? It should spin completely around 4-5 times on each spin. If the brush will not spin, or if you feel any resistance to it spinning, this is the reason why your belt continues to break.

If the brush can not spin, the motor shaft will continue to try and spin the belt, but since the brush doesn't spin, and the belt doesn't move, the motor shaft will just burn right through the back end of the belt.

If your machine is actually the model that's listed on this Fixya repair page, the Dirt Devil Featherlite model M085845, then your machine uses the following roller brush:
Dirt Devil Plastic Brush Roll for Model 085845 Part # 2-881020-000

The next time that change the belt, install the brush back into the machine, but this time pull up on the belt towards the brush to make sure that the belt spins freely, and spins the brush as well. If the belt doesn't spin the brush, there's some issue, and the belt will break as soon as you turn the machine on.

I hope this helped you. If you find out that you don't need a new brush, feel free to use the comment section here on the repair page and let me know, I'd be happy to walk you through some more advanced diagnosing. If you found this helpful, please be so kind and rate my repair and / or leave feedback for me.

    Thanks so much,

This vacuum has given me nothing but problems!!! The newest problem is the brush. I have changed the belt several times, it is a new one now. The brush spins, but as soon as you set the machine in place to start cleaning, it stops and burns up the belt. I need help. I don't want to buy another vacuum!!!

    Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
The problem that I can see id that you may have a bad brushroll that doesn’t spin freely, and has either bushings or bearings, a simple test is that take the brushroll out of the vacuum, set in on end and spin the brush, does it spin freely or does it stop, the next thing is to turn the motor pulley on the motor, it should spin freely as well, if either one is not spinning freely or easy then there is your problem, or make sure you have the correct belt size and that is a genuine eureka belt instead of a replacement belt for that model, those are the 3 things that should work for you, if the vacuum is less than a year old – take it to a factory authorized vac dealer and if it is the motor and pulley, it is covered, usually the belt and the brushroll are wear items and are NOT covered, some places however might cover the brushroll as a courtesy to the customer. So feel free to contact your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
