Freezer not staying cold in the hot weather

I have a GE Profile bottom freezer drawer refrigerator. It has been very hot here in NY since Saturday and we do not have the AC hooked up in the whole apartment yet. The freezer is showing temps of 20-25 despite being set at 0. This happened last year but I honestly forgot about the problem until now. Any ideas??

I have the same problem. My food has partially defrosted 3x's now. I just took all of my frozen food out and put it in another freezer and have a service appointment scheduled for Friday. Right now my freezer is at 21 yesterday it was at 54! This refrigerator is only 6 months old.

Same problem as all of you. Mine happened at 17months old, not covered under warranty and cost just under $400 to have them replace the circuit board. Top of the line fridge and it is just junk! I am reading on blogs that there is a recall on these circuit boards but no one has yet to find where to call to get a free one. GE shouldn't be charging people to repair something that was bad right from the beginning whether it is past the warranty, or not. I just can't even underestand how you buy a top of the line product and you have a problem before it is even 2 years old.

I also bought a GE microwave at the same time, again, top of the line, $400 piece of junk, which I have also had nothing but problems with. It needed a new circuit board also within the first 6 months of owning it. That one was covered under warranty. Oh, and get this, the repairman had to order the circuit board rather than get me a new fridge because he says "this microwave is obselete now", are you kidding? it's 6 months old.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GE PRODUCT AGAIN!

Same problem with GE Profile bottom freezer drawer fridge in Peterborough Ontario.

Repair man was here Friday and says the problem is ususally the circuit board not turning on the fan loacted at the back, bottom right corner when facing the back. It cools the coils located in the botton of the unit. Check if it is running. If not an external fan will help until the service man arrives.

But this didn't solve my problem. After he replaced the board it was fine for a day. But now, Saturday evening, the freezer is 20 degrees F and the fan is running! So there must be another problem. Dave

More info with respect to Solution #2.

I tried unplugging the fridge to reset the control board. (Leave it off for a couple of minutes.) This seemed to work as it slowly cooled down after that. But . . .

Repair man was back yesterday and replaced the control board for the second time after checking that the freezer coils were not frosted up, etc.. Temperature went up to 53 while he was doing his tests. Now, 26 hours later the coldest the freezer has been is 14. I think the compressor is failing but the service man doesn't agree, not yet anyway. We will see what he says tomorrow.

Freezer not staying cold in the hot weather

  • it sounds like the coils are not able to release enough heat to cool the refrigerator properly.
  • first i would make sure the coils under the machine are clean and the airflow around them is not obstructed in any way.
  • there should be a fan under the machine, make sure it is running.
  •  just to hold you over you can place a fan blowing behind the machine temporarily until you figure out the problem.
