Red light flashing constantly on dc16 when on charge, used to just stay permantly red without flashing until it went green when charged up.

  • Gary Morrison Sep 03, 2016

I had a similar problem when I bought an after market 2Ah battery. Would stay solid red for a few seconds then flash red. I believe my problem was that the battery had gone into "sleep mode" I.e. it was discharged to the point that it "sleeps" in order to protect itself. So......I simply attached a domestic DC multi adapter to the terminals on the battery that are marked + and - (the 2 outside terminals on a DC16 Dyson battery). Switched on the DC adapter for around 10mins ans this was enough to "wake" the battery. It now charges as normal attached to the DC16 in the Dyson charge mount.

SOURCE: my dyson dc16 is not holding a charge

I had that SAME problem! It ran for just a few seconds after having a full charge. Cleaned the filters, tried everything. Just needed a new battery...

My Dyson DC16 hand vac's battery finally went out at 4 years, which is about right. I didn't want to pay Dyson $75.00 for a new one!

I found a good deal on ebay for new batteries that didn't break the bank!
That's all it needed.

It's good to have my hand vacuum back! I missed it!

Rock on Dyson.......

SOURCE: Hello, what is the significance

yes the reason the green and red light were flashing the way they are is because its a warning to you that the battery is either no longer good or there is problems with your wireing. Also those vaccumes were designed to not charge when there to cold or to hot as a saftey issue.

When is the DC16 red light supposed to change to green?

You can see the manual for the DC16 here: (
    https://www.dyson.co.uk/medialibrary/Files/Dyson/Support/downloads/UK/floorcare/Manuals/dc16_uk_manual_cb_120710%20pdf.pdf )

Following the troubleshooting manual on page 6, fully charging the battery takes about 3 hours, for a run time of 6 minutes, so I'm not sure where 10 minutes comes from. The battery ships partially charged and was supposed to have been charged 3+ hours before a first use to get a full cleaning span.

It's also noted that you can get red lights if the temperature is out of an optimal range, and if the filter is not seated properly, so these would be things to check as well.
On the general checking list - look at the contacts for the battery and for the charger, make sure nothing is bent or corroded. Corrosion can be generally treated with use of some fine sandpaper or steel wool - be sure to blow the area clear of any steel wool fibers if you go that route. A better electrical contact sometimes will allow charging to get above a threshold voltage that will let the 'I'm charged' light turn green.

    Good Luck! :-)

If it is within the warranty period get Dyson to replace it. If not, live with it until it fails completely, then buy a Hoover. Your computer board is starting to fail. That's not repairable.

    Flashing lights.

The Flashing lights indicate several different things. 1 flashing red light means its time to charge your unit. if it is still flashing after charging then you will more than likely need to change the battery. A flashing red and green light means that the unit is overheating which could happen if the filters need to be washed, or that there is a blockage or if your machine has been left in direct sunlight. Allow 1 hour for machine to cool down. 3 flashing lights indicated that the pre-filter has been put on incorrectly. I hope this helps. If you do decide to wash your filter dont use any type of soap it is not needed and allow fiter to dry for atleast 24 hours. putting a wet or damp filter in will damage your machine.

UNIT WILL ONLY RUN FOR FEW SECONDS THEN THE BOTTOM OF THE 3 LIGHTS WILL FLASH

    Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC16. A single flashing red light indicates that the battery needs to be recharged. When fully charged, all 3 LEDs should illuminate without flashing. However, if the red light continues to flash even after at least 3 hours recharging time, there may be a fault with the battery or charger assembly.

Please get in touch with us directly - one of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you to determine whether the battery or the charger requires replacement. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). We'll look forward to hearing from you.
