When I type on my IBM wheelwriter 30 series II electric typewriter only the top part of the letters typed are being printed. How do I get the whole letter to be printed?

typing the top half of each letter
Donna, sounds like the carriage spool is stuck or out of adjustment. Not to hard, but pick up typewriter and slam it down on counter to see if it put carriage and spool back in position.
Good luck.
Try cleaning the sensor that lays behind the printwheel that tells the machine the wheel is in the home position, the sensor is in the print carrier. take wheel out and look down and you will see the sensor, clean it off with clean cloth. also put some white out on the top of the printwheel and see if it stops at the same place every time when you turn on and off.
If it is printing only the tops of the letters the platen has worked loose. Press down firmly on both ends it should snap into place. If the print is generally bad the plastic print solenoid cap is probably broken. We sell them for 20.00 includes shipping and instructions.
If it is only typing the top half of the letters the platen may not be fully seated in the side frames, push down firmly on both ends of the platen it should snap into place.
You can try code I to increase the impression but probably the print solenoid is gummy or the plastic solenoid is broken.
We sell the caps with installation instructions for 20.00 includes freight.

The most common problem is the platen (black roller) gets out of position. Be sure the black latches are aligned wuth the side frames then push down firmly on the ends of the platen it should snap into place.
Look at the ribbon and see if the letters are on the very top of th ribbon. If so on the front of the carrier there is an eccentric screw for adj. ribbon height. Loosen the lock nut W/ a small 9/32 wrench and adj screw to raise ribbon. Be sure to check L/O with the underscore as you can get it to high.
On the L. side of the keyboard there are 3 keys store, play & delete. Press and hold the store key and type an address 01-99 release the store then type info., when complete touch store again.
To print hold play and type the address.
To clear use the del. key.
BE SURE YOUR BATTERIES ARE GOOD OR STORED INFO. WILL BE LOST ON POWER OFF.
If it types only the top half yhe platen is probably not all the way in. Make sure the 2 black latches are lined up with the side frames then press down firmly on both sides of the platen.
