This happens when the try is removed before the brewing unit resets fully.
To fix is easy.

You might have made a cup of coffee after dumping the grounds and forgot to put the grounds bucket onto the tray. Ask me how I know! In any case, the previous solution won't work.
It's easy to fix though. Pull out the tray and you will see the mechanism hanging down preventing the grounds bucket from sliding in. Take the bucket and tilt it in and around the mechanism. Then hold it up while you slide the tray in under it. Turn on the machine and it will reset. Enjoy!

Hi, I tried sliding the bucket under the mechanism hanging down (2nd suggestion above), and the tray could still not be pushed all the way back.
Simple solution that is guaranteed to work:
- remove the tray
- notice that there's a tiny white / beige piece on the right inner side; this piece gets pushed *UP* when the tray is inserted; it's the switch that informs the machine that the tray is fully pushed and can operate normally
- using a pencil or a toothpick, lift this piece up to force the machine to think the tray is inserted, then turn the power ON
- the machine will complete its cycle normally; some water will drop inside, just wipe it off once it's done
- the tray can now be inserted normally
