We have a phillips 57 inch model number 55pw9317f and it has a rainbow and color is awful from what i see with the pictures i am having the same problem but dont know how to fix it . can you help

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

How do you know if you need to replace the fluid? can you show me some pics of good red green blue color or some bad colors

If the glycol is bad, there is a easy way to tell:

Remove the back cover and with the set on use a small mirror--put it over each of the three Lens--red will never be bad this way.

What you want to see is a green picture on the green tube and a blue picture on the blue tube.

If instead of a picture either the green or blue look like a floodlight with no picture--the glycol is contaminated.

What happens is bacteria grows in the blue or green glycol--never the red--for some reason it does not like the red color.

Usually the blue will be the one first affected---picture will have a yellowish look over most or all of the screen (turn the color all the way down and stand back at least 10 feet and look at it,

Changing Glycol involves some important things---this stuff is like antifreeze bit ten times more toxic.

If you find yellow and want to know what is really involved respond to this posting and I will assist you.

I have a Philips 46pp9302/17f picture is distrubed by waves of red and blue colours...I think it maybe the bulbs?

Go into the customer menu and find and select convergence with the Philips remote.

If it is out or skewed OR red or blue will not move in some direction it is a convergence circuit problem. Confirm this and I can tell you what parts are needed and a cost for them (Usually under 30 total)

Lots of people see this kind of trouble and think one of the picture tubes is the problem.

Let me know what you find and I will help.

I have a 60" projection tv philips magnavox model #9P6040 C104 PTV843. The color looks bad, the picture looks orange and red. What do I need to fix it and how much will it be.

You have one of two problems based on your description.

1.) Go to a channel that is in black and white and turn the color on the set all the way off.

Examine the screen and picture from several feet back----if the picture is mostly red and looks somewhat yellow in the main part of the screen you have a GLYCOL problem.

These sets have on each picture tube a sealed unit full of Glycol to cool the face of each tube (set has a red, green, blue picture tube)

If you find the yellow/orange look with the color off you most likely have bad Glycol in the blue picture tube---it never happens to the red--bacteria gets into the glycol and eventually there is no picture coming from (in most cases) the blue tube.

Loss of blue will leave you with Red and Green--mix those two and you usually get a orange/red affect.

There is a way to also confirm this with your eyes--it involves getting the back cover off of the set and holding a small mirror (with the set turned on--you have to be careful not to touch anything)

If you look in each lens you should see a fine picture--one red, one green and one blue--if as I suspect the blue tube is contaminated it will not have a picture and will look like a blue floodlight.

IF THIS IS NOT YOUR PROBLEM--GO into the customer menu and select convergence--what you are looking for is will red and blue adjust or not--are they skewed and will not move.

If this is the case you have a convergence problem--I can tell you what is involved to fix in either case.

Let me know what you find--I am here to help people.

Picture not real clear

  1. take the back off and look inside the blue and green crt's to see if the fluid is clean you can tell by comparing it to the red tube because the red coolant fluid never goes bad

Colors shadowing eachother, adj convergence, but will not save.

Sounds like your convergence IC chips have failed. You can buy the parts from various suppliers or you can just get a complete repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com

My phillips model 60pp920217f has a horrible picture...no green to the color

The green CRT coolant has congealed thats whats giving you the green halos. Change the coolant in the green and blue and your set will be fine. red is never affected so the red coolant should be fine.
