This is very unusual and I've never come across it. I can only think there has been some type of software corruption as you can not put the screen in backwards or upside down.

One of your ribbon cables is being pulled out or is not connecting when you open your DS.
If you go to www.powergamingparts.com you can find manuals to assist you in opening the DS and where to locate the "clips" that you will need to tighten.

There is a small latch on the connector that may be stuck. Try this. Turn the DS Lite upside down with the charger plug facing away from you. Press down the on the plug gently with your right thumb and with your left hand pull the connect away from the socket. FYI this should be a simple fit! Make sure the connector was not jammed in upside down to start with. It has a clear six sided shape to it!
Replace upper screen and the Upper front bezel. Or replace the upper screen and the complete DS Lite Housing. You can find them on the well known auction sites. Please be aware that you must know what your are doing. If in doubt, send it to Nintendo or a local Nintendo repair service
