I bot a hp mini laptop recently.. ws working well..bt sddnly it ws nt chrgng ystrday and showed cross sign over battery in control panel.. why is it nt chrgn and wht to do?

If the laptop is still working when it is plugged in , then the ac adapter is good and the battery is just bad. If the laptop will not work when it is plugged in then more than likely the ac adapter is bad.

while the computer was plugged in (to charge battery) did it indiacte a LED light to indicate that it was charging the battery ?
try taking battery out and using AC adapter only -- does computer work ok ?
also, if the battery is over 18 months old and you use it often without AC adapter, you may need to replace battery

Some laptop manufacturers allow for batteries to be refreshed through the CMOS. Refreshing a battery can help restore older batteries and give them more life, and in some cases report if the battery is bad.
