It needs to be at least 600 degrees F and should reach 800 or so. 60/40 solder melts around 600, but flows better at about 700 degrees. Most soldering guns require a on-off-on--- sequence to keep the tip at proper temperature. If your gun doesn't seem to be heating, try tightening the tip nuts. Hope this helps!

98 Buick Century. Temp gusher pegged when cold, odometer reads error, gear selector says 2,& oil light comes on when cold.

I agree , if it were only one area of error I would first and foremost say verify your temp with a point and shoot temp gun , but it sounds like you need new cluster , I'm sure the other Answer is also correct to re solder the components , but most just want it fixed quickly . I would also remove battery so when re installed your cpu re sets

Gun will not heat up tip unlesss it is pressed kind of hard against material? is this the way it is supposed to work...?

This sounds like a "contact" problem where the tip installs in the gun. I would remove the tip and burnish the connections with some very very light sand paper or steel wool (an emery board is a nice 'tool' to add to your tool box). You'll also need to clean the gun connections themselves. Also make sure the connectors are tight, but be careful not to overtighten them or you'll break them. Good connections = good heat transfer. Good Luck.
