I have to reset (unplug power, wait 10 secs, then plug back in) a lot to have internet access. The router is recognized and it says that I am connected, however it also says that I have no internet...

There are lots of factor why you have that kind of problem when it comes to your router. Before following the steps in this, check if your computer has a stable Internet connection when connected directly to your broadband modem. If you do not have a stable Internet connection with your modem, kindly contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

May I know what is the model and version of your Linksys router?

If you run into Intermittent Wired Connections Using a Router:

Step1: Enabling MTU on the Router

- Access the router's web-based setup page.

- Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer.

- Go to the Address bar and enter your router's IP address ("192.168.1.1" is the default IP of most Linksys routers) then press [Enter].
NOTE: If the IP address of the router has been changed, type the router's IP address in the Address bar instead.

- A new window will prompt for a User name and Password. Leave the User name field blank then enter your router's password ("admin" is the default password), then click OK.

- NOTE: If the password of the router has been changed, type the router's new password in the Password field instead.

Step2: When the router's web-based setup page appears, look for MTU and set it to Manual. Enter the MTU value of your Internet connection in the Size field.

1468. The size DHCP or cable providers prefer.

1400. Maximum size for DSL.

Step3: Save settings.

If you run into Intermittent Wireless Connections Using a Router:

Check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks.

Regular wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:

> Wireless interference within the network.

> Wireless settings of the Linksys router are still set to default.

> Firmware is corrupted.
===================================================================
NOTE: If the procedure does not work, needs to update the router

Running slow

Is it running slow on both wired and wireless connections? how about if a PC is wired directly to the modem? That will eliminate the router as the issue (slow internet could be your modem or the connection itself).

If you're sure it's the router (wireless and wired) then upgrading the firmware would be first step. You can download the latest firmware from linksys.com and get it installed via the web interface of the router (probably found by going to http://192.168.1.1).

If a firmware update doesn't do it you can change your DNS servers from being automatically detected from your ISP to public ones. This may help web pages load faster. You can enter them also using the web interface. Set the Primary and Secondary DNS address to the numbers below (they are from OpenDNS.com).

Primary 208.67.222.222
Secondary 208.67.220.220

Computer repair tech said Linskey wireless caused internet prob

If you are using DSL as your internet connection there is a timeout period that could be setup in the linksys.

In order to change this you need to log into your router and on check on the setup page. You see the timeout option.

Check with your linksys manual for detailed instructions for logging into the unit. If you dont have it, you can always get it from their website.

Brand new linksys wireless, Host (Hard wired)has intermittent connectivity. Indicates it is conneted and is working properly.Cannot browse Web. The wireless part works great!

try to plug the Ethernet cord for the Host computer on another Ethernet port on the Linksys router.

have you tried replacing the Ethernet cable that's connecting the Host computer to the linksys router?

check if Host computer can get a response from a website by going to Start>Run, then type CMD on the Run box and click OK. On the black screen, type PING www.yahoo.com then press Enter.. if you get the word reply 4 times, it means the computer is connected to the Internet.
If there's no response from the PING test, it means there's totally no connection.

It's also possible the problem is with the Local Area Network adapter or Ethernet adapter. Try disabling the Ethernet adapter and re-enable it by going to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections, you should see the Local Area Connection, right click on it then select Disable then Enable it again. then observe if you're still experiencing intermittent connection on the Host computer.

and if you have security software, try disabling it temporarily and check the connection again.

and let's make sure the cable or dsl modem is connected to the Internet port on the back of the Linksys router.

How To Set Up PPPoE DSL Connections with a Linksys Router

This article describes how to manually configure a Linksys Router for broadband DSL that uses PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) for authentication. For automatic configuration options, please try: 1. Linksys Easy Connect (see Answer ID 1650 for more information), or 2. The Linksys Setup Wizard CD-ROM software that came with your Linksys Router. Simply insert this CD-ROM into an online computer before connecting your Linksys Router, and the Wizard will provide step-by-step instructions on how to install and configure your router. If you are unable to set up your Linksys Router by using one of the above options, use the steps below to manually configure your router. NOTE: It is recommended that you print this article for offline reference. STEP 1: Before You Begin In order to set up your Linksys Router, be sure to first have the following: 1. A Linksys Router. 2. A DSL modem. 3. A working computer that can be wired in directly to the router for initial configuration and testing. 4. Two (2) standard Ethernet network cables. Linksys Routers come with one (1) standard network cable that you can use. 5. The PPPoE DSL username and password assigned by your Internet Service Provider. Depending on the provider, your username format might be similar to username, vzn123456, or an e-mail address ([email protected]). If you are not sure what your username and password are, contact your Internet Service Provider for more information. STEP 2: Check Your Internet Connection Before installing your Linksys Router, it is important to first verify that you can successfully access the Internet by connecting directly to your modem (without your Linksys Router installed). 1. If you are connecting for the first time, follow the instructions provided by your provider to set up your modem and computer for online access. 2. Verify that you are able to access the Internet without any problems. If you are not able to get a connection, contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. When you are able to access the Internet using your modem, continue to Step 3 and proceed with the installation of your Linksys Router. STEP 3: Connect the Hardware Follow these steps to connect your Linksys Router to your modem and computer. 1. Shut down your computer and unplug the power cords connected to your modem and Linksys Router if they are currently powered on. 2. Disconnect the network cable that connects to the back of your computer. 3. Connect the network cable that you just removed to the Internet port (or WAN port) located on the back of your Linksys Router. Your modem should now be connected to your Linksys Router. 4. Connect a second network cable back into your computer (into the same port that was disconnected in #2). 5. Connect the other end of the second network cable to one of the numbered ports located on the back of your Linksys Router (labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). Your computer should now be connected to your Linksys Router. The following diagram shows how your network should be connected. Verify that your connections are correct, and continue to the next step. 6. Plug the included power adapter into the router?s Power port. Then, plug the other end of the power adapter into a nearby electrical outlet to supply power to your router. 7. Turn on your computer. Do not turn on your modem at this time. NOTE: The following username/password prompt screen will vary by operating system. 4. Once logged in, the router?s web-based Setup utility should load. In the section labeled Internet Connection Type, or WAN Connection Type depending on router model and firmware version, select the PPPoE option on the drop down list. Click here to view what an older Linksys router interface looks like. 5. Once PPPoE is selected, enter your PPPoE DSL username and password provided by your Internet Service Provider into the router?s User Name and Password fields.
