Old projection tv NEC PJ-60PI circa 1972

Hi,

I have a very old tv and the picture has suddenly dulled. When I turn it on, the picture flicks bright as normal but then when the switch is released (it seems) the whole image fadesand becomes unfocused.

I've tried so many places including Nec themselves but am getting nowhere. Any info whatsoever would be great.

It's an 1972, yes 1972 NEC PJ-60PI fold out projection television which reflects the three tubes onto a mirror then reflects onto a curved screen.

Cheers,

Dave

yeah, yeah so the last bit doesn't really make sense but I'm sure you can work out what I mean...

Three coloured lights (tubes?) reflected from a mirror which folds away when the tv is not being used.

yes it's 1972. There's a suppliers emblem which looks authentic, although the suppliers are no longer.

I'm in Peterborough, England and there is no one locally who will even look at it for less than £100...

You will want to find a local servicer for an honest tech to come out and check for bad connections on boards. It will be hard to find someone for a 1972 unit and parts even harder. If you are near Cleveland, I can help

I know the fold out type units. Worked on a lot of mitsubishis and sonys that used the design. It may be fixable, but you will need an experienced tech to solve your problem

Hi,if pic is dim it might be time to replace the lamp .They usually last 6000-8000 hrs 2-3 yrs.If you already replaced the lamp it could be the board that powers the lamp it's called the ballast.Good luck and God bless you!

NEC ,model no. PJ-4650EN Projection

If you look into the Len's of each tube briefly when it is on and look at the quality of the picture. It sounds like the fluid is bad and should be replaced by a service company.

Check the projection bulb to see if it is remaining bright. If it is bright, the ballast may need to be replaced.

Screen goes dull at times

The dulling picture really sounds like a lamp failing. You would need the sony lamp xl-2100u
The ghost image may be easier to fix, sometimes as lcds age you will get a slight shift in a color. deep in the sony menu there is a parameter (menu-setup-imageshift) that will give you 3 levels of correction, this may solve this issue.
