GE side by side refrigerator model no TFG20JAWWW 627 litre is occasionally leaking water

Check the drip tray in the freezer section where defrost water drips from the defrost heater melting frost during the defrost cycle. If ice blocks the drain hole in the tray inside the freezer(usually behind the evaporator cover) the defrost water will travel into the bottom of the freezer & onto your floor. Some models also have a second evaporator in the fresh food section. A blocked drain or clogged defrost drain tube can cause the problem.

I have a Kenmore side-by-side. It seems that the top shelves on both the freezer and fridge are not getting cold enough. Only the bottom seems to work. Any suggestions?

First off a model number would have been a HUGE help. However speaking in generic terms there are a few things you need to check. Open the back of the unit by removing the fiberboard cover and make sure the condensor coils and fan are CLEAN. Then check the compartment drain tube that rests in the DRIP PAN underneath the unit. Make sure the END of the tube is free of obstructions. The drain tube END can get submerged in some pretty gooey stuff (lint muck gunk) and clog. Then make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment is running at full speed. If your hearing the fan blade rubbing on something it wil be an ice block on the evaporator coils most likely caused by an Automatic Defrost Problem. (Bad heater, Control, Defrost thermostat)

Should you notice the evaporator coils are blocked with ice you must do a manual DEFROST by unplugging the unit emptying the freezer compartment and directing a fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (Makes a water mess so don;t leave it un-attended) After that return the unit to normal service. If the performance starts degrading in 2 - 4 days you have an Automatic Defrosting Problem that will require troubleshooting / service.

We have Kenmore Model 7018 2000 and we have water inside the refrig on the shelves on top and on the very bottom. Don't know where to begin to look.

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the inside of the freezer at the bottom of the rear cover.

Water leak self defrosting

Self-defrosting refrigerators usually dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates. (See a more detailed explanation of this in the How Things Work section of our website). If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan. In some refrigerators, the defrost water is intentionally directed down the back wall of the refrigerator, where it then flows to the bottom of the refrigerator compartment and out to a small drain--usually located beneath one of the drawers at the bottom of the refrigerator. If the drain becomes clogged or blocked, the water may back up. To fix this problem, clear the obstruction. Another cause may be the following. The refrigerator may have doorframe heaters to evaporate any condensation on the cabinet frame. If your refrigerator is equipped with a switch inside that says “energy saver” or something similar, while running in that mode the door heaters are disabled. Turn the switch to the opposite setting and wait 24 hours. If the condensation disappears the problem is solved.

I have an amana 18 top freezer that is about 15 years old. I am getting water on the floor of the refrigator, i have unplugged it for 24 hours, and it still does it. No water is in the pan. What do i do as...

No water in the drip pan, water in the refrigerator - this is a classic case of defrost drain issues. If your unit has a little drip cup at the back of the refrigerator (inside) you will notice a hole above it, this is the drain coming from the freezer - When defrost cycle kicks in the heating element melts the frost on the evap coils above it and water drips through the hole and inside your cup in your refrigerator - then it should drain through a tube that extends to the back of your refrgierator through a hole, from there water drips down the drain tube down the pan at the bottom above the compressor so it can later be evaporated with the heat.

What you have is a plugged drain tube - water drips in your cup and overflows down the back of your refrigerator - if you are able to remove this cup and tube, pass a long wire down the drain line to dislodge any debris or whatever is blocking the line - clean your cup and also check for any debris. Also at the back of your freezer panel look for any debris or obstruction to the drain, causing water to back up and leak elsewhere. Once all this is checked, and you put back the cup, water should flow normally and drain fast enough through the drain tube.

good luck

We have a Kenmore tht is about 6 years old or so. We bought it at an auction. From the beginning, we had to put a dish on the top shelf to catch dripping water. We just put up with that for a long time....

Several things may contribute to this issue. The defrost timer may be malfunctioning which could cause the freezer to be cold because of ice in it but ice is blocking air flow to the refrigerator section so it gets warm. If the unit is actually trying to defrost as it should then the trough that the water follows leaving the coil may be blocked with fuzz or a wrapper that got in a bad place or just dirt. It may have a small heater in the tube that takes water away that is bad or the tube under the fridg that collects the water for evaporation may be kinked or plugged. The defrost timer is probably under the fridg or in the back under a panel. the thermostat should be near or attached to the adjustment knob.
