Some elements heat too much and probably cause plastic melting. It's quite dangerous. I'd recommend you to search for a new vacuum cleaner. If you don't know which one to choose then go to ReadyResearch and read useful articles about them.
HI, Thanks for contacting the FixYa team. 1. Plastic Burning Smell - This means that there is friction in a plastic part of your Dyson. The only place this will be coming from is the BrushBar. The brushbar has jammed somehow. The smell arises as the rubber belt is still trying to turn the plastic brushbar but the brushbar is not moving. To solve the problem you will need to unscrew the soleplate using a 2 pence piece, this is done by inserting the 2 pence piece into the 3 plastic screws on the underneath of the Dyson. Turn the screws a quarter anticlockwise. You can then remove the soleplate. You will probably see that there is a build up of debris by the brushbar. This is more common on The Animal version as pet hair mixed with dust gets stuck in here, especially if the machine has been used on a damp or wet surface. So clean this area out and then try manually rotating the brush bar in each direction. If you have been using the machine for too long with the burning smell then it is likely that your brushbar will be melted where the belt attaches to it. If this is the case then you will need to get a new brushbar. If the brushbar is not too damaged check that the belt has not broken. If the belt has not broken then replace the soleplate. Turn the screws a quarter in a clockwise direction. Should your belt be broken then please re-post and we will show you how to sort this. Thank you

I would suggest you invert the vacuum and remove the plate covering the spinning brush assembly. You should check the belt located on one side of the spinner brush to see if it is worn or broken. Also remove anything wrapped around the brush that could be affecting it. Ensure the brush is free to rotate and seated correctly. If the belt is worn or broken, or the spinner brush is unable to spin, replacements are available from a licenced repair facility. I hope it helps! Good Luck!

My Vacuum cleaner smells bad. What can I do to stop that?
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Depending on the brand name and model # you should do a few things, try changing the bag and or change or clean the filter depending on what type of vacuum you have, a dirt cup model or a bag system. The vacuum cleaner dealers have Vacuum crystals that can be sprinkled down on the carpet and then you can pup the crystals from the carpet with your vacuum. If not I suggest that you take it in for a good and general cleaning – a lot of times the dirt and dust get built up under the hood and just sits there – especially if you have pets and it is a hard smell to get rid of unless you have it serviced or cleaned. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
Thanks, Don the Vac Man

SOURCE: Oreck Vacuum Cleaner problem (upright)
To jrican-80,
My new upright(NOT an Oreck) is over three years old and hasn't needed a new belt so far. Orecks clog very easily, and when you bring it in for repairs, or for the yearly "tuneup", what the store manager wants you to do is spend more money on the existing sweeper, new roller brush, for example. That's the reason for the yearly checkup, to BRING you back into the store so you can spend more to help Mr Oreck make more money.
Seems like you either have a connection to Oreck or simply think that
an overpriced, cheaply built vacuum cleaner is actually a good machine.

It sounds like the brushroll has caused your belt problem and will be the cause of your burning smell as well. What commonly occurs is that carpet fiber, hair, string, thread, etc got wound around the brushroll and some will get caught in the end caps which is where the bearings are.The end caps need to be removed and cleaned so that the bearings can allow the brush to rotate freely.Check that there is no melting of the end caps or the base plate where the end caps fit into the machine._Good Luck
SOURCE: Electrical Burning Smell from Henry HVR200 Vacuum Cleaner
Hi! Highly unlikely that you need a new motor. Highly likely that you need new carbon brushes. The smell is caused by excessive sparking between the worn brushes and the copper commutator segments. Most carbon brushes (and from memory I suspect this includes Henry's) have a copper wire buried in their last few millimeters, and you really need to change them before that becomes exposed. The longer you run it like this, the more likely you are to damage the commutator, so change them sooner rather than later. When you change the brushes, you can smooth off the commutator with very fine abrasive paper (the objective is to smooth it, not scratch it!), and then blow all the dust away (or **** it away if you have another vac, of course). Incidentally, you don't say if you are using a paper bag in your Henry. Some people, because the top-hat filter is so good, try to manage without a bag. This is false economy! You should always use a bag. I hope this helps! I value feedback, so please remember to rate this response.
