Last night I was watching my DLP and the colors went all crazy. It's hard to explain exaclty but there was a lot of purple and red. I turned it off to reset it and now it won't turn back on. There is a loud vibrating noice coming from the back and the lamp light flashes, and it wil then shut itself back down and try to power up again. Eventually all three lights on the front power button will start to flash but the screen will not turn on, any ideas?
Same problem: No onset, symptom or anything just all of a sudden, blank screen, and a loud humming/vibrating sound. Believe it or not I had the protection plan from Circuit City and called them up. Suprisingly they were easy to deal with, set up an appointment and the guy showed up on time! He knew right off the bat that it was the color wheel and it took him 20 minutes to replace it. The wheel itself actually shattered! He explained that the bearings can go bad and the wheel gets loose. Subsequently it wobbled, hitting the housing and shattered (explains the sudden blackout.)
I read somwhere else in this forum that it took someone an hour and a half to replace it. I'm pretty handy but when I opened the back of the TV, my wife gave me "the look" so I called.
For those who care: The guy was courteous, answered all my quests. and even vaccuumed ou the back of the TV. I don't advocate the Protection Plan but I was glad I had it. Cost me $499 in 2004 expiring this November. He explained that it would have cost me out of pocket $218 for them to come plus parts which in this case was another $130. So I guess I lose in the end but if you told me I had to dump $350 into the TV now, I seriously would have considered buying something new (That's just me).
You need to replace your color wheel. I had the same problem

Problem is a little different. Set will make loud vibrating noise and picture will flash in and out and looks hazy. We will immediately turn off TV and the vibrating noise gradually stops. It sounds very bad but maybe a quick fix?
I have a new wheel but can't find the old in the TV. How do I get to it???
