I would check Maxtors website to see if there is compatibility issue using that particular drive on a Mac.

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

Is this mac compatible

According to what I can find, no it isn't here is a link to the Seagate page of external hard drives that are mac compatible. Just look at the top left side of the page to pick your MAC OS version:

As long as the Esternal is formatted correctly it should work fine, it might be that you computer wont read the hard-drive, not the files.

Erase and reformat to be compatible with new mac

Think I might have solved it myself. Here's how:

Open Disk Utilities and select the external hard drive. Select the "Erase" tab. Hit "Erase" at the bottom right.

That's all. Just dragged a folder onto it and it worked.
