Hello. From FixYa Support (printmastert): Your problem could be due to an old version of firmware installed on your device. Go to this link: http://bit.ly/biqa0o and type in the keycode 401ec4. That will download the newest firmware to your computer. Then, to send it to your printer, go back to the above link (http://bit.ly/biqa0o ). Jjust use this keycode usbflash. That will download a usb utility that will help you flash the new firmware to your printer. Your X340 needs to be connected to your computer via a USB port. Hope this helps.
Well 900.xx fax initialization error, in a lexmark machine is a serious internal error. its hard to fix and even if you were to get lexmark technician to fix it, the cost would far surpass the cost of a new one. i would recommend you replace your unit. It will save you.
Hello. I have a solution for you.FAX fall in these devices is to
inform you that this is not necessarily the Faulty fax. Often, after an exchange of such a module, and so faxes could not be sent. Often, it is also a Formatter and wine lists are usually both. In this case, it is often so that the costs are too high and are bought from another device.
But
to you a little better mood I would say that you can try to upload new
firmware, but I notice that the 10 devices has helped to just two. By the way, I propose to you Lexmark X215. The model slightly smaller and slower than the X340 but it is my opinion much more reliable.
Regards........
A quick fix for most communication errors can be
achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. Simply disconnect
the printer from your computer. Reboot your pc. Unplug and re-plug the printer
into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to
your computer. Then try to print again once the computer fully recognizes the
USB connection.
If that doesn't help, try the steps below:
1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.
2. Re-brick your printer.
Pull out the power supply, black box where the power cord is plugged in at the
back of the printer, and put it back after 30 seconds.
2. On your computer, go to Control Panel > Printers
and Faxes.
3. Delete the Lexmark print object.
4. Reboot your pc.
5. When your pc turns on, reconnect the printer.
6. Wait until your pc fully recognizes the USB connection. To check, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes. If you see a new Lexmark print object in the list, then try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

The advice received did not assist in solving my problem - it was rather a problem statement. I urgently need more constructive support.
Nina, thanks for the advice. I have downloaded the firmware and the usb utility, however when I attempt to flash it to the printer the flash utility/file does not pick up the printer to complete the task. It is almost as if the computer is completely frozen. Any more suggestions?

Nina, the problem seemed to be faulty hardware. I found a guy who exchanged the fax module (reconditioned) which solved the problem and the printer is now working fine. Thanks for your support.

I also thought that the repair cost would far exceed the cost of a new printer, especially after I received a quote from Lexmark specialists. Luckily I found a private technician here in Pretoria who could exchange the fax modem and the top feeder unit for half the price that I originally paid for it, and the printer is again in mint condition.
