"Will not turn off, stuck on with display saying 'pre boot mode'. Does nothing but this - please help!"

This indicates that the on/off switch is shorted out. You can duplicate this problem by taking a working Nuvi and keep holding down the on/off button when turning it on. It will stay in this mode until you let off on the power on/off button.

Computer stuck pre boot screen

Hello,
Restart the computer and tap F8 until you see the options to boot to safe mode. Use the arrow keys to highlight safe with networking and hit enter. Once you are inside safe mode, then do a system restore.

Will not move past pre start screen/ operating system not found

Sound like you might be be booting from your hard drive or you might have a music cd or movie dvd in the CD/DvD Drive. When you turn the machine on watch the screen and see what key it says to hit to Change the Boot Sequence or Boot Order, then hit that key while the message is displayed. Select your hard drive as the boot device and then see if it boots.

If it boots you need to reboot and watch the screen again to see what key it says to hit to get into the Bios or System Setup. Once in the Bios or System Setup tab over to the Boot Sequence or Boot Order and make your cd drive the 1st Boot Device and the Hard Drive the 2nd. This will make the change permanent, whereas the change we did before is only for that boot cycle. When you boot just make sure nothing is in the CD/DvD Drive.

Welcome to Fixya

Try to boot the computer in safe mode. Turn off the computer then turn it back on. keep on tapping F8 then select SAFE MODE form the selections. If your computer wont able to boot to safe mode then you have a corrupted operating system. You need to reinstall windows using the recovery disk that came with the sytem.

No signal - stuck in Kansas

Try this and see if it fixes it for you...first disable bluetooth on your unit.

1. Power off the unit.

2. HOLD down the power button and you will see "Pre Boot Mode" appear on the lower part of the display. KEEP HOLDING the power button down and the display will flicker, do this until the pre boot mode message disappears. This seems to take a long time (60 seconds at least).

3. Once the pre boot mode message disappears release the power button and your device will perform some activites to recover from problem.

System software missing

Just had this problem over the weekend. I emailed Garmin and received a zipped file to reinstall original software with step by step instructions. It took about 6 minutes to do and works perfect again. Go to the Garmin website and email "software system missing" issue to support email address. Have your serial # handy. I received a reply in 1 business day. Hope this helps!

Computer moniter

Press F8 during startup to show the boot options. Boot to VGA mode (if available) or safe mode and change your resolution in windows to the recommended 1280X1080. To do this in XP just right click on the desktop and select 'properties', click on the right-most tab and move the slider.

In Vista this would be right-click desktop, select 'personalise', click 'display settings' and move slider.

Hope this helps,

erch.
