So what kind of un-recognized format your photos turned into? Are they now RAW format? I guess yes because I met this kind of error on my Canon camera. In your case you should take a try this photo recovery software PhotoRetrieval. It should help you out. If you are Mac user, go to Photo Recovery for Mac.

Just connect your camera (memory card or stick etc) to the computer which has installed this program and start to recover. But just remember - DO NOT write anything back until you get the deleted data back. Best regards.

Remove the memory card from camera, and then connect the memory card to computer with a card reader, you can download a photo recovery software and use the photo recovery program to scan the memory card and recover your files. here's detailed step by step tutorial for camera photo recovery
http://www.asoftech.com/articles/how-to-recover-deleted-photos-from-camera.html

If above does not work, you may have to format the memory card (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the memory card and recover your files.

Have you tried this camera on another computer?
If this camera memory card can be read functionally on another computer, you'd better copy off all your stored photos to another memory card or drive and format this card immediately to check whether it can still be read on your camera and computer.
But, if this card unfortunately also gets the same error on this computer, you'd better try to apply a memory card photo recovery freeware to get all your stored photos back successfully for free:
http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/04/memory-card-error.html
In fact, this freeware helped a lot as the external hard drive of my friend was mistakenly formatted. It finally restored all the needed data of my friend. It always works well on both of a memory card and a hard drive. So, I believe it will also help you a lot.
Try to read more information of this freeware here:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/04/data-recovery.html
After experiencing these troubles, I hope you can learn a valuable lesson to back up everything important well all the time.

Try photo recovery software to rescue the lost photos, here are some you may rely on. Both programs can also recover videos and music.

Photo Recovery Software (for Windows)
Mac Photo Recovery Software (for Mac OS X)

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to your Kodak memory card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

SOURCE: Missing photo files

use asoftech photo recovery program to scan your usb and then recover your files.
http://www.asoftech.com/apr/

This software scans all storage space on usb and then join pieces together to recover photos. So even virus affected your file table, and put virus to boot sector, the program can still be used to recover your photos.

How to restore deleted pictures in kodak m1033

STOP
do not write anything to your camera's SDHC card, otherwise you willt re-write the files and permanently loose your important info.
Install this photo recovery software called Tenorshare Photo Recovery(For Windows orTenorshare Photo Recovery for Mac).

From inside the software,navigate/choose your SDHC card letter( "D", "F", "G" ... ? ) and scan the section where it says "Deleted Rrecovery" . Scan the card and Set the destination folder(folder where recovered files will be saved) somewhere on your computer.
BTW, you can get this recovery software from

http://www.any-data-recovery.com/
It will show you the file name, type, date and size of your files and thumbnails for your pictures that it found on your card.
WARNING:there will be lots of recovered files,do not set the destination folder as your DESKTOP,otherwise you'll end up having 100000 files on your desktop... = total mess :)

Deleted a picture, now it says unrecognized file format. How do I remove this?

You can recover pictures from your camera using advanced Remo data recovery tool. With the help of this tool I was able to perform picture recovery from memory card. So you can try it.

Mac says Jpeg files are "unrecognized format"

The memory card may have corrupted. You may need to try using recovery software to download your photos. Try the mac links provided in this article. Once you've recovered your photos, and backed them up on your computer, format your memory card in your camera, using your camera's format feature (look for it in the menus).

Unrecognized File Format comes on screen instead of picture.

Sounds like you're pulling out the card without using the "safely remove hardware" function. This corrupts the card. If your pics are safely on the computer, format the card in the camera to erase it and get it working properly again.

Kodak Easyshare V803 "unrecognized file format."

Sounds like there is a fault in the SD card.

Try an alt. card reader and computer.

Hopefully you will have the chance to retrieve the pics. If not ;(

Once pics are transferred. The SD card needs to be formatted. Remember this will delete all data on the card.

Unrecognized file format need to fix photos

Well that is an odd situation if the card recovery programs won't work. My solution is a card recovery program.

I found a program that really assisted me and was free was Zero Assumption Recovery the website is:
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm

You do have to download the program, and I think you have to have a memory card reader on your computer, but it recovered most of the pictures that I had lost when my camera listed my pictures as unrecognized file format. I hope this helps.
