My 3 year old Panasonic VCR (DMR ES20) is still stuck at 000000 after a power outage. I have unplugged it, it says Hello but it won't open. If I press on Power for a few seconds, the blinking time shows up and after 10 seconds it reverts back to "hello". Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello, Ejband -

I believe your Panasonic DMR ES20 is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and not a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder.)

If you do not have the user manual for your DVR, you can find it here to download for free:
http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/panasonic/dmres20.html
It is a PDF document, so you will need Adobe Reader software (free).

I suggest you run through the set up procedures for your DVR, just as if it is a new installation. Among other steps you will need to reset the time (reset the clock.)

Hello
I would like to help owners of DMR-ES20 to fix the known "zero" error. This occur due a failure on PSU section that can't provide correct voltages to other modules.
Is recommended replace 7 electrolytic capacitors (Cap Kit) with 105°C range.

SOURCE: Panasonic DMR-ES20

For the remote to work, make sure "video" is selected (instead of "tv"). It's the little button on the remote under the red button at the top that turns on the TV ("TV/Video")
As for the split screen, I've had that happen numerous times (when I lose power or revert to default settings). YOu have to go to Setup, Display, and select 4:3.
I hope I have helped you. I'm having other problems - with the audio. Some channels have no audio (maybe 3 or 4) and 2 channels are in SPANISH!!! (??) Weird that it's not uniform. I even tried reverting to default settings (and got that split screen!), but didn't help. It "jumped" a few times to the input type screen. I'm thinking some chip got fried or something. I've had it almost 2 years, and guess that's the "built-in" obsolescence!! :-)
Good luck!

SOURCE: Looking for the regional code

Region codes are preset in the DVD unit. DVDs are encoded with a region code and are only playable if the DVD player is programmed with the same code as the DVD itself. If you want to play Australian DVDs, you will want to use code 4. There are 9 codes. Check below to find out what region each code is for:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

You usually may only change a region code 3 times before it becomes permanent. You need to enter the menu-setup options in your DVD player and you'll want to look for "region code".

SOURCE: Panasonic DMR-ES45V - DVD recorder / VCR combo Remote not workin

My remote is not working. When I press a button, I get the following message on my unit: U12, U30, SET #, CHK REMOTE #, or RC #. What can I do to fix this? The message displayed means that the remote control and unit are not communicating and the remote needs to be programmed. To program the remote, press and hold the same number that is displaying on the unit and the [ENTER] or [OK] button for more than 2 seconds. For example, if the unit displays “SET 2”, press and hold [2] and [ENTER] or [OK] for more than 2 seconds.
