My machine has a clicking noise, and the technician tells me never tu use Singer needles on it, as they are too long. Is he right?

Never heard of that but it worth a try to get some Schmetz or a universal one.

When the hand wheel is manually operated it then makes a clicking noise near the presser foot
Have you tried a brand-new needle? Frequently, a bent or damaged needle will make noise.

If you are able, hand turn the handwheel and watch the needle and hook action. You may see the needle hitting. Or try removing the needle and listen if the sound continues. If it doesn't, then it's the needle. If a new needle doesn't cure the problem, could be the needle/hook timing is off. May need service.

Not making stitches
Check to make sure that your needle is all the way up in the needle clamp, and the flat part of the needle is towards the back of the machine, if your bobbin loads in the front, either vertically or horizontally.

If the top thread is still not catching the bobbin thread, your timing is off and needs to be adjusted. ANY sewing machine technician can do that for you; it does not have to be a Singer technician. If you cannot find one, or they don't work on Singer machines, I understand Sears will repair any model of sewing machine. I don't work for them, and they don't know me, by the way.

Adjust timing
Presuming your needle is clamed in fully up position & is not needle bar height problem,this needle/hook timing should get your local sewing machine technician to get it adjusted correctly.

my suggestion is that the machine needs to be serviced at a sewing machine shop, because for 1.it's not responding 2. it used & you don't know when the last time it was serviced 3.something is wrong with the machine.
hopefully there are no broken parts, but having the machine serviced will tell that.
as for a manual

Go to the home page
Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example w510 ) & click search

I think if you watch the hook as you turn the wheel you will see that it is not moving.If it's not moving it can't pick up the thread or sew or wind the bobbin. If you really like this machine you can take it to a technician who is going to tell you you have a broken gear.Always have them replaced in pairs. On this machine there are 2 gears( 1 Pair) on the left and 2 gears( 1 Pair) on the right. If the machine is making buzzing noises, replace the machine instead of the gears. Singer makes a nice machine which sells for around $300 which will do more than the one you have and it is easier to use. Look at Model 7467. I sell quite a few of these and they don't give me or my customers problems.

Singer sewiing machine clicking
Remove the needle , tighten the needle set screw so the clamp doesn't rattle and run the machine.This will give you a better idea of where the noise originates.
Remove the top cover and put a drop of sewing machine oil(not 3 in 1 oil) on anyplace that moves and rubs. Run the machine again and see if you still have the noise. Replace the top cover.
Open the side cover(left side) put a drop of oil on any thing that moves or rubs(Shafts or joints). Run the machine again.
Remove the bottom cover and repeat the above processes.
If you still have the problem and it is bothering either you or the machine then it needs to be seen by a technician.
