You may try reseating the hard drive by referring the below link which is a user manual for Dell Inspiron 1750:

However, if this doesn't help then please explain the issue with the hard drive then I can check and see what can be done.

Dell had known issues with KB issues in the past, it can sometimes be fixed by tightening or losening the screws that hold the keyboard in place, (under side of the laptop, marked KB). hope thisd helps

Hit function (Fn) and the F11 key.

It must be a Volume device drive problem,please try to update your volume device drive software,find your original dell Inspiron 1420 volume device driver software or download it from www.dell.com

Try this:

Shut down, unplug the AC adaptor, removed the battery, and hold the power button for up to 1 minute to discharge.

Make sure there are no stuck keys.

Restart.
