Hey there, My 1987 Harley flh police special is suddenly running really rough. It is popping at the spark plug end, I've replaced plugs and leads it's like coughing missing a spark or something like that. Not idling now unless the choke is on full, is this electrical or fuel. What should I look for?Any advice would help.

Sounds like coil break down, need more info

  • HD fixer Mar 23, 2012

If the choke has to be pulled out in order for it to run, this has nothing to do with spark or a "coil breakdown" which isnt even a term, in other words, does not happen. Your issue is carburetion, you "pilot" jet or "slow" jet is plugged with debris or the bike has been sitting for a while and the fuel has jelled or become hard enough in the tiny jet that it won't allow fuel to pass at an idle. Remove the float bowl and inside the small tube you'll see a very small jet inside which is removed with a small flat blade screw driver. Once this is cleaned out, your bike will be back In good running order. You will be able to see a very small amount of light through the center of the jet, you can use one strand of a wire brush to plow through whatever is blocking the jet...... Hope this helps!

Vibrating bike

if the plug is white you are running lean.
plug should be tan to medium brown.
lean will cause rough idle, and popping on deceleration.
resolve = clean idle jet, circuit, and set mixture screw properly.
A job like this should really be left to a professional on that bike.

1987 Harley Davidson FXSTC Softail Custom backfires @

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.
9. Improper valve clearance (too tight).
10. Check for generated diagnostic codes.

99 mpv missfires, splutters.wont idle & has no power. when MAF is disconnected runs a lot better. I replaced the Maf but still does the same. The problem started suddenly, drove to work ok but when i

replace fuel filter, clean fuel injectors.could have bad fuel, do a code scan before buying new parts.faulty egr valve or faulty engine coolant temperature sensor cause engine run poorly.replace spark plugs and wires because if spark plug wires is bad or spark plug and ignition coil is bad that will cause rough idling misfiring and stalling you have dead cylinder not firing properly..

My car a 1987 300zx turbo 2+2 suddenly started to

It could be a couple of things. I first guess is to check the fuel filter. If it has not been changed out within 15-25,000 miles deposits that within the gas tank has restricted the flow and will cause a hesitation or very rough idle. Now the desposit could have surface close to the injectors restricting the flow. Second, tune-up ( distributor cap and button, spark plugs, wires, etc). Third, check all you fuel hoses leading (especially leading from the fuel filter) to and from the engine. If they have never been changed, I would do so. Hope this a start of resolving your problem.

1972 shovelhead engine needs spark plugs and oil!

I have a 75 FLH and I use the Bosch Platinum WR8DP if you have the long plug if you have the short one it is W8AP, they are an exelent plug. As for the oil I use Rev-Tech grade 60 but you should stick with one kind of oil and for a FLH it is 4 qts.

I have exactly the same problem and codes you listed on my 2000 Camry 4 cyl. I replaced the plugs which had no effect. My friend mechanic said the problem is deffinitely the wires and I could also need to replace the coil pack.
